I'm a little ahead as I'm off on holidays so I'll probably fly through this book. Was a little reluctant to start this as I picked this up to fill up a 3 for 10E deal. But that said, so far so good!!
I'm really enjoying the style with which this book is written (flashback, Arlo, Usha, Arlo, Usha). The jump between the two characters keeps the book moving along swiftly.
The setting is also interesting, or at least the little we have learned at this point.
*****Spoilers******
The first flashback at the start of the book implies that humanity (or at least those within the city) no longer have traditional childbirth. The fact that the doctor has no clue how to deal with the mother in labour is a big hint in this direction. Also, it seems as if Usha was genetically engineered.

***Spoilers ahead!! ****
So, I've finished the first section and all I can say is those poor children!! While the revelations (secret Natural, living organ cooler) were hardly a surprise at all they seem extra harsh in the light of the age of the kids. We know Arlo is only 11 and can assume Usha is a similar age. Also poor Usha has two murders to her name. She's very young for all the guilt that's going to cause.
As for the world they are in, it's very interesting that they have genetically removed pain. Think I wouldn't mind that too much!

******spoilers ahead*****
Well, that got dark! I had thought that Usha had it pretty bad up until now, you know, only being kept alive to keep her organs working for her Citizen, accidently murdering two people and now finding herself stuck with the beggers and cripples and with a possibly broken arm but poor Arlo!!!
Imagine discovering you were secretly a Natural, shuned and hated by all Citizens but then to discover that they were using Naturals to extend Citizens lives!! Not only that but the new Regis had decided to burn all the books in the library and frame the doctors for treason!! And in case book burning wasn't bad enough I suspect Arlo is being sent to be dissected to extend the Regis' life!
Dark, dark turn of events!
