Talk about is the social hierarchy to which Stevens is completely loyal—yet which exploits him thoroughly.

Stevens is ruled by tradition at the expense of his own feelings.

Ying Ying (yingyingshi) | 4 comments Stevens has a strong sense of responsibility and of utmost respect to authority, to the point that he does not and wishes not question any actions taken by his master.
Such perspective is perhaps no longer common in the western world, where personal opinions are encouraged, but this culture is still pervasive in various Asian countries.

He still believes in some sort of aristocratic code of ethics, in which he is little more than an obedient robot, at the limit an aristocratic slave.
