What main ideas—themes—does the author explore? (Consider the title, often a clue to a theme.) Does the author use symbols to reinforce the main ideas

Diane | 2044 comments I think a major theme of the book is a search for meaning in one's life. Karl is trying to find meaning in his own life in a new and unfamiliar country. Many of the characters Karl encounters seem to lack meaning in their lives. Occupations mentioned in the book often reflect this. An example of this is the job of a lift operator. This is a repetitive and menial job where the lift operator is providing mobility and elevating others while he remains at the bottom.

Karl is also searching for a secure place that feels like home to him, where he can feel accepted and welcome. He has been forced out of what he had known as home and now is on a quest to find a place that feels like home in America.

Tracy (tstan) | 559 comments I agree with Diane.
Karl's alienation because of his language, his youth, and the meanness of others, especially family, leaves him seeking acceptance and family.

I agree would also add that finding yourself is important and finding a place where you belong.

I would also say it warns about the dangers of who you trust.

Alienation, failure to achieve happiness yet there is less of that here and Karl has some hope to achieve happiness in America.

Also punishment (the sword held by the Statue of Liberty). Sent to US for punishment, thrown out by uncle for punishment, fired at hotel for punishment.
