Nolan Krueger Readers will have their eyes glued to the pages with how connected they are to the book when reading Carl Deuker's Gym Candy. I am not even a football player and felt like I was on the field and in the locker room. Mick is a high schooler who lives in Seattle in a nice house and rich neighborhood. His dad was a former NFL football player and his mom just wants what is best for her son. He is tired of not being the strongest and fastest one on the field, so he looks to steroids for that extra boost. The way Deuker added Mick's feelings about steroids and about people he cared about, really brought the story to life. The conflict can resonate with anyone who's parents push them a little too hard to be good at something. This story also does a good job twisting in irony within the story. Most people will enjoy how fast paced this book is, along with the hint of humor mixed with sarcasm. I recommend this book to everybody, not just athletes. Everyone will enjoy this book with how Mick handles the adversity and big expectations he has to follow. I give this book a flying five star rating.
