Salem's Lot is a great book, but I don't remember it being about a haunted house? Granted, it's been years and years since I've read it, so I could be confused;-).

Yeah, it's not really a haunted house, just the contents of it is scary. The Shining is a better example of a King Haunted House story.
I want to nominate A Winter Haunting by Dan Simmons. But I'm happy if that's not chosen as it's kind a a sequel to Summer of Night (Don't look at the synopsis if you haven't reas SoN and want to).

I so agree. Any author that drags me up to the attic and leaves me having to turn the light on when I go to the toilet at night has my utmost respect in this genre haha.
