Frodo Baggins

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments Here's my first if hopefully many recommendations for the team building challenge. I'm recommending Little Brother by Corey Doctrow to Diane because you enjoyed both 1984 and Ready Player One. I think you would like it because it has some of the 1984 themes but has a more similar tone to Ready Player One. Bonus is I'm pretty sure Doctrow has it available in ebook for free on his website.

I've been thinking about my answer to my own question, and the one sticking out to me is Bob the skull from the Dresden files. Just a magical talking skull with a British accent.

I think Bob would object to that description. Lol!!

Love him too!

Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ (lindsaysingerofstories) | 707 comments On the topic of the Dresden Files...I read the first one and wasn't a very big fan. Do they get better? I don't really remember why I didn't like the book, I think I just found it dull. Looking back on my review I wrote that I "wish that Harry was either less lame as a wizard or stronger as an investigator." Does that happen or am I just too harsh of a critic?

message 212: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1744 comments They get a lot better. And if you can, listen to the audio books.
Two words; James Masters

I felt the same way Lindsay, but I am willing to give it another try and read more since everyone says they get better. 8-)

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments In answer to Bethany's question, I think Hazel from Watership Down (Watership Down #1) by Richard Adams is one of my favorites

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments For my first round I have recommended to Kelly and Lindsay the book The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller . They both have it on their TBR list and I say go for it.
It is one of the best books I have ever read and the first book in a long time that made me cry (but in a good way). It is worth the read!

Yes, this one looks so good! I've heard great things about it. Off to see if Overdrive has it....

They do get better when Harry stops being such a loner, around book 3 or 4.

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments Random question of the day: Favorite real food? Book food you would most like to try?

For me: pizza, butterbeer.

Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ (lindsaysingerofstories) | 707 comments Butterbeer pizza? Is that a thing??? :P Just kidding.

Seriously though, I do also want to try real JKR butterbeer. And any of the Weasley twins' products. Also Elvish waybread is on my list too. :)

message 221: by Bety (new)

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments My second recommendation is for Caly: The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff

I found it great in its anecdotes for understanding Taoism from a different perspective and explaining it to other people. Also, who doesn't love Winnie the Pooh? Not explicitly a kids book, even though at first you might think it was.

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments To Candace I recommend Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1) by Seanan McGuire , because thee Miss Peregrine series reminded me of this book. Misfit children are cared for in a strange home. It's very atmospheric.

message 223: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1744 comments Lauriie, you should totally read How to Howl at the Moon (Howl At The Moon #1) by Eli Easton , it's a fun light hearted series about dog shifters. (Book 2 in the series is one of my favourite books) :)

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments Bethany wrote: "Random question of the day: Favorite real food? Book food you would most like to try?

For me it is Pancakes, which I know is strange to some people but I love breakfast foods in general and one of my favorite things to do is have breakfast for dinner.

Thanks Bethany! It is actually one of my favorite books! I own a copy and have read it several times. I don't have a lot of the books I have read on Goodreads because I have never taken the time to go back and add all the books I had read before joining GR. But I appreciate the recommendation, it truly is one I love. 8-)

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments Good Morning All!

Lots of people have added books already which is awesome! Go Team! Unfortunately real life has gotten in the way of my reading addiction. LOL

Today I would like to recommend a book to Bethany, Megan and Amanda A - you are considering Church of Marvels by Leslie Parry and I say go for it. It was one that I really enjoyed and the setting and plot are bit different than what you usually find and it has great female characters and is a bit historical as well.

I'd say you couldn't have picked a better book to recommend. You did pick a book she'd love if she hadn't already read it :)

Candace W | 372 comments This might be a dumb question, but do textbooks count for this? I have to read several textbooks for my business classes. Some are quite long and would be a good number of points for us if they did.

Same for me too. Some of my friends have had the butterbeer at Universal's Harry Potter theme park and said it is pretty good.

message 233: by Amanda A (new)

Amanda A | 629 comments Thanks for the recommendation, Caly! I will have to move it up on my TBR.

I was able to use textbooks last time around as long as I started them after the start date of the game. :)

Well, I love to eat, so I'm finding it impossible to list just one favorite:-). The list would include filet mignon, cotton candy, cream cheese mints, and fried chicken.

Book food: for years, I wanted to try Turkish Delight after reading about Edmund eating it in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I finally tried it a few years ago (two different kinds, in fact), and I hated it. So that was disappointing!

Current book food would probably be the butterbeer:-).

Kelly B (kellybey) | 786 comments I had planned on recommending to all the team mates a book I was reading: The River at Night. It started out so good: a group of middle-aged women go on the adventure of a lifetime by white-water rafting in Maine. Things start to go wrong right from the start, and quickly go from bad to worse. I guess it would be considered a thriller/survival type story. Unfortunately, it got a bit ridiculous at the end, so I'm no longer recommending it;-).

I just started Ma Barker: America's Most Wanted Mother, and this one isn't exactly blowing me away either. At least it's short.

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments Finished my 1st TT book today! It was the Circle, and in general I enjoyed it. Still trying to get into my ebook, Skin Game by Jim Butcher, and haven't even started an audiobook yet. I don't know how I managed to plan my way into such busyness for the first few days of Team Towers! Hoping to get in a few good solid hours before we go rock climbing tomorrow. Yeesh.

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments Random Question of the Day:
Are there any topics or combinations of themes you want to see in a book that you haven't discovered, or haven't found to your satisfaction?

Personally, I would love to read a book that was like a cross between the rugrats and the X-Men or something. Like toddlers with superpowers from the toddler's point of view. I think it would be really funny, even if it sounds stupid.

At times I feel like reading about something specific. The last few times I've been looking for psychics working with law enforcement to solve crimes. (where the psychic ability being the only supernatural element in the book). Haven't found many of those and very few of them were worth reading.

Also books where one of the MC's self-harming (cutting). I've read several books where this is the case but it's never really done well.

Will check with the mods, but I would assume if you started after the start date and read the whole thing it would count. Non fiction counts I know.

Congrats on finishing it and glad you liked it. Don't worry about all the busyness! I am only 50% through my first book. This is a marathon not a sprint. Don't forget to add your points to the BoM sheet when you get a chance. Thanks

CrazyCat (Alex) | 397 comments Quick question: Why does it say 0 Points on the spread sheet for one of my books?

message 244: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1744 comments It's a glitch on the spreadsheet. It usually happens with the kindle editions. PC have to be added manually by Caly / Bethany. (The same goes with the audio books, only that the pages need to be amended to pages instead of hours)

Sometimes things just happen! I usually try to read something just over 100 pages during a reading slump just to have the satisfaction of getting through something!
