I hate reading slumps :(

When I'm in one of those I don't necessarily have trouble finishing books, my biggest issue is actually finding and picking up the next book to read. :(

I know that feeling! Sometimes I get done with a book and spend an inordinate amount of time plopped in front of my bookshelf just staring at it.

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments Random question of the day: How do you feel about re-reading books? Do you like to do so, and why or why not? Is there a kind of book you tend to re-read if so?

I used to be totally against re-reading books, thinking There's so much out there, why would I read something again I've already read? But then I started to realize recently that I could no longer remember major plot points, much less minor but poignant details, of some of my all-time favorite books. So I started to re-read just a couple favorites, and modified my scheme of rating books such that a book only gets 5-stars if I would definitely consider reading it again. This also helps me decide what books to keep once I've read them -- if I'll likely re-read a book or the series, or I'm likely to highly recommend the book or series to other people and loan it out I keep it. Otherwise to the used bookstore or library donation pile it goes!

message 261: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1744 comments I consistently re-read books. In-between new reads (when I don't have the energy to start something new) I often pick up one of my favourites and re-read the best passages. That way I don't have to pay much attention and I know I'm going to like it.
I also re-read books and series when it was a while ago I read them and need to remember what happened, before continuing.
I'm horrible to finish series I've started and have about 60-ish on the go. So I tend to forget story lines between reads.

If I felt I had to re-read the preceding books before reading a new release in a series I would probably have a really hard time finishing series too! Usually I just google what happened up to the point before the book I'm about to read.

message 263: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments I've always re-read books. That way I know I'm going to love the story. Sometimes I just want something comfortable to read, like being wrapped up in blanket.

I general never re-read a book unless it has been years and years since I read it the first time. I just barely have time to read all the new books on my list.
Now my one exception to this is my spiritual books like the "Tao Te Ching" and the "The Tao of Pooh" 8-) but I tend to read portions of those at a time rather than cover to cover.

I have a hard time deciding which book to read next as well. That is why I love challenges that want you read something specific like a book with a red cover so it helps me choose what to pick. That is why I am glad that Bethany is coming up with some mini challenges and buddy reads for us. 8-)

My biggest problem with the books I want to re-read is that I tend to lend them out and they never get returned so I have to keep re-buying them. I think I've now bought three or four copies of The Tao of Pooh, at least two copies of the Tao Te Ching, two copies of Antifragile, and two sets of the Protector of the Small series.

Same! I loved Wobble because it gave me so much direction on what to pick up and read, while providing enough options that I usually had a couple of options but not my whole shelf.

I used to avoid re-reading books, but in the last year or two I have re-read a few of the Harry Potter books and a couple others just because I forgot what happened and wanted to refresh my memory.

I wish there were more good medical dramas out there. I LOVE Tess Gerritsen, who writes medical thrillers (she also does the Rizzoli & Isles series, which is good) but I want a Grey's Anatomy or Chicago Med type of series!! I would love that! But thus far, I have found nothing like that in book form that is up to par. :(

I just saw Dark Matter on a "Books to Devour in Less Than 24 Hours" list and it has made me even more eager to start reading this!!! However, I have at least four other books I HAVE to finish first and then I will get to this. I am really excited to read it though!!

I have to let a good long while go by before I do a re-read. Like, long enough to really forget certain details otherwise it starts to drive me crazy and I just start skimming the book and its not worth it to do the re-reading. I keep a lot of books intending to re-read them because I enjoyed them so much and never get around to it because there are just so many new books out there. However, my favorite series (HP, Hunger Games, etc.) I do tend to pick up and re-read for comfort every now and again.

message 273: by CrazyCat (Alex) (new)

CrazyCat (Alex) | 397 comments I usually don't re-read books. I think there are only two books I read more than once. It feels like I waste time with a book I already read when there are so many out there I want to read. And I can't really enjoy a story when I have this kind of deja vu feeling knowing what will happen next.

Annika | 1744 comments What can't you stand when you read a book, what makes you want to throw it out the window?

message 275: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1744 comments Personally I can't stand books that have main characters that are too stupid to live, airheads. As a supporting role maybe, but I don't want to read an entire book about them.
I also have an issue with shallow and selfish MCs, who deliberately hurt others.

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments Annika wrote: "What can't you stand when you read a book, what makes you want to throw it out the window?

I absolutely can not stand when an author deliberately stops a book with a cliff hanger. I love series and trilogies that leave you wanting more, but to me each book should be a story in itself. It is being greedy if you Make the person read the next one to find out what happens especially because unlike TV where you only have to wait a week, with a book sometimes you have to wait a year.

message 277: by Candace (new)

Candace W | 372 comments I hate when you read a book and it all ends up being pointless or there’s no real closure on anything. I’m not talking about cliffhangers, though I am not a huge fan of that in books. I am talking about when the book is about, say, a murder and you never end up finding out who did it or what happened. I remember reading a book a few years ago and that’s exactly what happened. A cop was trying to solve this series of murders and trying to connect them all. It ended with the cop determining the murders weren’t related, but you never find out who committed any of them or what actually happened. It was so disappointing.

Oh yeah, forgot about that one. And I especially hate it when the books are only about 100 pages long. That just makes it so unnecessary and ridiculous. Just make one book from the beginning and stop annoy your readers. (But I guess the authors want to make more money)

Yeah, I know what you mean. That's so annoying. Another thing is when you read a book and then questions what it was about. Where the plot and point of the book is missing =P

message 280: by Bety (new)

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments The thing I hate is not the characters being unlikeable, but them being unrealistic or trope-based or all characters seeming the same. See this comic: image: Tropey Characters

Annika | 1744 comments Omg, that image is brilliant! And so true!! :)

Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ (lindsaysingerofstories) | 707 comments ugh, YES to everything that has been said!!! My skin is crawling! I am having a really hard time spelling and forming sentences!!!

* I absolutely do NOT understand the point of 34 page books on Kindle Unlimited. Or sometimes you even have to pay for them! Sometimes they're longer but still, how can anything substantive really happen that is worth paying $2.99 for??? What?? No, thank you!

* Cliffhangers!! Unsolved or unrelated storylines or when relationships don't end up back together!! These are book DONT's for me!!

* I also dislike books that never peak. I think this is a given but I just have to say it. Some books just have no action and characters that never go anywhere and never really do anything....I think that this is literally its own genre but these books I just want to set on fire and throw out of windows for some action.

* And then there are the "boring" girls who call themselves "plain" and "normal" and "clumsy" then in walk the "gorgeous" new guys who all of a sudden find her to be "the most beautiful creature we've ever laid eyes on"...no you're hotter...no you're hotter....no you're hotter!! OMFG!!! I'm over it.

Okay, I think I'm done. Well, and I hate when my favorite character dies, but don't we all. Ok. Done.

message 283: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1744 comments actually, I don't mind short books - if they are done well (and very few are)
I read a truly beautiful short story (8 pages). And it was very gripping. It was no prequel/sequel, but a true stand along story.
They are few but they do exist. I think this one was a freebee and can be downloaded from GR

I think I'm going to not join/start any other team challenges and just do individual challenges for a while. I'm really burned out from team challenges. That's really hard for me to say because I love the conversations and camaraderie of them but its been hard for me to keep up and for me to not control my reading and I've been slave to them for a LONG time now...I think I need some freedom for a little while. I don't think I've not been in one team challenge or another for +year...who knows how long. So yeah, once the ones I'm in now finish up, I'm just going to do a spell it out or two or something just for kicks and read for this since its so laid back. That's my goal. I think. Its a hard temptation but I think my brain needs it. :\
