ChrisP Poyner | 67 comments Does anyone enjoy a book differently if they have enjoyed some spirits or have had a good meal. Or dislike a book based on if they are feeling depressed, tired or agitated. Thinking out loud:)

message 352: by Ora (last edited May 08, 2017 04:59PM) (new)

Ora (oeamis) I'm a cheap drunk so if I have any spirits, I can't read. I have never really thought about it after having a good meal. Being in a good mood definitely helps with liking a book.
My mood has helped determine if I like a book or not. If it is from an author I really like and just not into the book I will set it aside and try to find something else. Finding the right book always helps improve my mood.

message 353: by Ora (new)

Ora (oeamis) I'm glad I started the series again. I read Spider's Bite a couple of years ago and got side tracked with other series. I really love Gin.

message 354: by Stacey (new)

Stacey Kennedy | 250 comments I definitely feel that I connect to a book (or not) depending on how I'm feeling and what's going on in my life.

I have to get back into Gin series. I keep forgetting about it!

message 355: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments I definitely find my mood affects my opinion of a book. If I'm tired or stressed I tend to have less sympathy for characters with non problems or are kind of moany. I do tend to pick books based on my mood though so that doesn't happen often.

I do think however if a books really good it won't matter what state I'm in.

I don't think I've ever read drunk.

message 356: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I have! It's pretty cool! I skip around so much depending on mood it isn't even funny! I usually have at least 1 chunkster going, 1 paranormal, 1 cozy mystery, 1 non-fiction & some fluff. That's just the minimum! I don't know why I'm like this... Maybe there's a 12-step program somewhere?

message 357: by ♦Ashley♦ (new)

♦Ashley♦ (ascherger12gmailcom) | 1131 comments I'm a total mood reader. I think my mood definitely affects my like/dislike of a book.

@Lauri - I usually have several books going on at once too, but not quite that many ;)

My mood can often affect whether I'm enjoying a book or not. I've put down books in the past as I'm not enjoying it but then try again months later and find it a great read.

I also find that the weather and other things affects what I want to read. I don't often read chick lit type books but if I do get a craving it tends to be when the weather is warmer or around Christmas.

Good news. We've been picked for DQs again. Alison's down for a day for A Gentleman in Moscow.

At the moment we are in 3rd place and every time I've checked we've been in the top 10 if not top 5.

Angie ☯ | 3092 comments I am a mood reader also - so my mood many times determines what I read, but I don't think it affects whether or how I like the book.....maybe if I read something that doesn't fit my mood, I wouldn't like it.

@Laura - before Kindles/ereaders, I had a different book that I had started in every room, Lol. I do have a few going at one time now, but nothing like when I only read physical copies of books.

I do that too! Read lighter/happier books around Christmas, darker books in the winter. Summer I can do anything and like to change it up. Sometimes I search for humorous books though when the weather is cold and gloomy- kind of like it's been in Ct lately!

Ora (oeamis) I just checked to see where I am at on my holds for BOMS.
I am down to #89 on 34 copies for the ebook and #8 of 6 copies for audio for A Gentleman in Moscow and #10 of 3 copies for the ebook of Strange the Dreamer. Hopefully I will be able to check them out before the end of the month. Just thought maybe I should request the audio for Strange the Dreamer if it's available.

ChrisP Poyner | 67 comments If your wondering about Lost Stars nominee for book of the month. I've read dozens of Star Wars books and this is by far the best one I have ever read. It crosses genres to a point where it could be considered a space opera. I have already this book and won't be voting for it:)

message 380: by Ora (new)

Ora (oeamis) Some of those books were expensive. Call me cheap, but I had to decide what to vote for by what interested me and then the cost.

message 381: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments That's why I tend to nominate books I already have but haven't read. They are also the ones I tend to vote for unless there's something I desperately want to read and don't mind splashing out on.

message 382: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 2826 comments Talking about bargains reminds me that Twitter can actually be really good for picking up free or discounted books. If you follow publishers and authors they occasionally do giveaways (I've gotten three free books this way in the last six months) and also tweet about sales or freebies.

ChrisP Poyner | 67 comments I pay a small annual fee to give me access to all the libraries in Indiana. With Overdrive it pays for itself quickly

message 384: by ChrisP (new)

ChrisP Poyner | 67 comments Ang Figgy-Pudding wrote: "What? I wonder if Nebraska does this. Our libraries use Overdrive. How did you find out about this, Chris?"

In Indiana it is called the placard. It cost $65 a year (which is a lot of money to me) but it pays for itself quickly. I put items on hold in 3 different libraries I get most stuff from Indianapolis but the secret of Overdrive is out and get take a moon or two to get a popular book. For example Gentlemen in Moscow. In mid size cities I found they have a pretty large selection without a lot of heavy traffic. Gentlemen in Moscow was 1/8 instead of 128/35.

I enjoyed it overall. I do love time travel stories, this is different from the ones I have read before. It was about 3 1/2 stars for me. I think it was more due needing to read the book for a task instead of being in the mood for time travel and science fiction. I do want to continue with the series. This is a series that I know I will enjoy when I am feel like science fiction.
