For sure he's not wrong about the need to restore trees and shrubs to areas overgrazed and overtilled.
I support a group called Trees For The Future which plants trees near villages in Africa. These trees bear fruit or nuts and the villagers are trained in caring for them, so they won't cut the trees down for firewood. Firewood is another of the biggest reasons for deforestation on an on-going basis; this book just mentions agriculture.
Deforestation: Social Dynamics In Watersheds And Mountain Ecosytems Sic This is based on scientific studies in the Himalayas and points up firewood gathering, almost always by women and children, as a reason for deforestation.
