One thing that occurs to me, while thinking about this discussion, is the fact that the murderers quote de Sade while they're going about their tortures. It's almost as if they are justifying their atrocities by quoting the "expert." They seem to distance themselves from responsibility for the deeds, other than to derive pleasure themselves from horrific acts.
If de Sade was actually writing metaphorically (as I responded before), would he be shocked by people who took him literally and enacted his abominable examples/suggestions?

Considering that his writings were apparently a criticism and condemnation of the excesses of the upper classes, de Sade would probably have been appalled that his works were being used to justify such atrocities.
