Discuss the role of those who planned the mission and their culpability in the failure of Hal.

The gave HAL a double bind. He had to keep secrets and that created guilt and he was unable to deal with this guilt. He also did not understand the concept of sleep.

There was supposedly a fail safe plan for HAL but the creators did not take in to account the fact that HAL was not a willing participate in the plan and had a plan of his own.

There was no way to communicate without HAL being aware of that communication.

Agree with Kristel they confused HAL with conflicting messages I would have suggested they programmed HAL without telling him the real objective and then when the sleepers who knew woke up they could reprogram with that information.

Good idea, you need to be on the space program team.

This really is another book, like I, Robot that addresses the ethics of artificial intelligence. As well as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

I have not read I, Robot but I really enjoyed the film.

Paula S (paula_s) | 220 comments The film is based on another story called I, Robot

Paula S (paula_s) | 220 comments I agree with Kristel about HAL. They gave the computer too much responsibility and conflicting information without knowing how that would affect him.

Did Dave complete the mission after all? He got to the intended destination.

I guess Dave completed the mission if never returning to earth is okay with you and he seemed to accept that fact. This story (movie) was the clincher for me for never wanting to leave my very own atmosphere here on earth.

Sushicat | 292 comments From the film I remember HAL being much more of a presence or personality than it was in the book. Clearly HAL had a sense of self, a consciousness, that goes beyond artificial intelligence. That, coupled with conflicting goals, led to his breakdown.

Oh, I am yet to see the movie (believe it or not), I was about to say 'no spoilers, please', but that you would be pointless...
