Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments I think I have a setting wrong but can't figure it out here so I am crowdsourcing for an answer.....

From my home page, I often comment on friends reviews or reading progress updates; however, I cannot figure out how to get a notification that they have also replied/responded to my comment.

Do you guys know how to fix this?

At the bottom of the comment box there's a tick box saying notify me when people comment. Make sure it's ticked and then you should be all set!

I don't see a box like that when I comment on people's reviews and status updates from my home page/news feed.

message 4: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Okay, I see that box when I literally go to the person's personal profile page, find the update that I want to comment on, make my comment, and then select "advanced" to make sure the box is checked.

That is a lot of steps. Seems like it would be a good feature on the homepage as I scroll through my friends' updates.

Am I still missing something?

message 5: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12924 comments It all just comes to my phone. Not sure how, it's like magic.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Try going to your profile, then account settings and then e-mails. You should be able to adjust your notifications from here.

message 7: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments I went to my settings and I currently have this option selected for receiving notifications, "Comments on an activity or review I commented on"

I would think that would be the right thing.

Maybe I need to have this box at the very bottom checked?
"When I leave comments on other items, follow discussions by default."

I'll give that a whirl. But am a little worried that it is going to suddenly send me a bazillion notifications...

Karin | 9225 comments Nicole R wrote: "I'll give that a whirl. But am a little worried that it is going to suddenly send me a bazillion notifications... .."

Yes, this happens. I set groups differently and as notification only, and then some threads I have to independently cancel them (such as people's personal reading challenge tracking threads, etc). I use a PC, though, so only see that there are notifications when I log in.

message 9: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12924 comments Karin, you cancel everybody's personal challenge threads? Does everybody do that? I didn't even know you could. Sounds like I should go back into my home computer just to take a look at what's going on with these things. I seem to get every thread from PBT, and the daily thread from the historical fictionistas, and I get the deli thread on the extremely rare time that somebody will post other than me in two other groups. Other than that, my phone notifies me when folks like or comment on something I posted in the general thread. But it doesn't invite me to follow discussions I have responded to. Which is fine. In any case, this is been a technological education.

I also do not follow most of the individual threads on PBT. I only follow the monthly tag and books read that don't fit the monthly tag. But, I check in several times a day just to skim what has new posts.

Susie Nicole, I have the same problem and I've never been able to work it out.

I believe you do the following:

1. Click on Account Settings
2. Click on the Email tab
3. Scroll down to "Comment and Action Notifications"
4. Indicate whether you want an email, a notification, both, or none for each option indicated.

Note, I believe this is a relatively new feature for GR, so not quite sure how it worked before . . .I personally let them email me about everything, so I suspect it also notifies me about everything . . .but now there seems to be more control.

message 14: by Susie (new)

Susie Hm. I've got everything selected with notification, but I still don't get notifications for replies to posts I have commented on in my general news feed.

message 15: by Susie (new)

Susie I've also got 'follow discussions by default' checked. Still no notifications.

Susie, you and I are in the same boat! I have tried everything, and I am a pretty tech savvy person.

I just cannot figure out how to get that specific notification! Grrrr....

message 17: by Susie (new)

Susie Me too! I found a thread in a Goodreads discussion a while back, and the Goodreads tech support couldn't work it out either. I'll see if I can find it.

It is just so weird that if I go to (for example) your page and choose to commend on one of your statuses, then I can get to the option to receive a notification when you respond (though it is not obvious). But that is such a PITA! It just seems crazy that there is not the same option when your status shows up on my news feed...which is where most of us are going to comment from anyway.

message 20: by Susie (new)

Susie Drives me nuts! I miss heaps of comments.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Susie wrote: "Drives me nuts! I miss heaps of comments."

Susie, I am trying a little experiment with you. I just comments on two of your updates: one from your personal page and one from your update that showed up in my news feed.

Did you get a notification about either of them?

message 22: by Susie (new)

Susie I got notifications for both. Did you receive my reply?

message 23: by Susie (new)

Susie I'm going to comment on one of your and see what happens.

message 24: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Okay, I got notifications on all of them!

Here are the two things I did:

1) I went into my settings and made sure I selected notifications for "Comments on an activity or review I commented on" and at the very bottom I checked "When I leave comments on other items, follow discussions by default."

2) I went to a status update from a friend's profile page. I then typed a comment but before posting it, I clicked the little "advanced" link below the box. Then, I selected the "
notify me when people reply."

Okay, that is really three things that I did. And, if I would have applied the scientific method here, then I could tell you which action resulted in me getting some notifications. But, alas, I went in without a plan!

I hope that it continues to work for me and isn't just some freak one-off coincidence!

message 25: by Susie (new)

Susie Did you get one on Today Will Be Different?

message 26: by Susie (new)

Susie Oh, I see you did! Hooray! I'll apply the same changes when I'm on my laptop later. Wish me luck!

message 27: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12072 comments Sometimes, I am so glad that I don't use a cellphone.

message 28: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments This has nothing to do with having a cellphone, this is the notifications you have at the top of your page when you log on that let you know recent activity.

I do not have notifications set up on my cellphone.

message 29: by Susie (new)

Susie Using a scientific method I can be sure that it's not the first suggestion as I already have that boxed ticked. I'll try the second and let you know, once these pesky kids of mine are in bed. ;-)

message 30: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Darn kids! ;)

message 31: by Susie (new)

Susie Hm. I already had the 'notify me when people reply' box checked too.

message 32: by Susie (new)

Susie I'm at a loss. I can't see anything else that would change my notifications.

message 33: by Susie (new)

Susie AND a whole other issue I am having is that when Goodreads posts to my Facebook page, if someone comments on Facebook I don't get that notification either!

message 34: by Joi (new)

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments Ok. I'm super late to this party, but I always felt annoyed about the same thing. I get notifications when my status is liked, but not when someone comments on it. Back in the day I figured out how to get e-mails when someone comments on my status or review. So at this point I get notifications when my status is liked, and a separate email when my status is commented on.

This does NOT notify me if I comment on someone else status, and they respond. Super annoying. I've never figured out how to get a notification when someone responds to my comment on someone elses' post.

Looking at all your guys' work. I went into my settings and switched
1) "Comments on my shelving or progress update " to BOTH
2) "Comments on an activity or review I commented on" to BOTH

"When I leave comments on other items, follow discussions by default." was already checked for me.

I guess we'll wait and see if any of this works?

I think I get email notifications when someone comments, but I don't get the notification indicator here on the site. I think... now I'm confusing myself as I try to puzzle it out!

I don't think I've ever gotten a notification after I've commented on someone's post, but I don't do that often, anyway.

Karin | 9225 comments Amy wrote: "Karin, you cancel everybody's personal challenge threads? Does everybody do that? I didn't even know you could. Sounds like I should go back into my home computer just to take a look at what's goin..."

Not threads I post on. Not group challenges, but personal tracking threads in other groups. I just click on the notification to view it and say no notifications. I don't need 20-50 people's notifications of their personal challenge tracking for one really long challenge (you know like a book a week or reading a book a year for an entire century).

Amy, I'm sure it's somewhere in the settings- but I have mine set up where the "notify me when people reply" box is automatically UNCHECKED. So I don't receive notifications on threads and groups unless I manually check the box and want to receive them.

I have thought about doing that, but then I might miss some important things in some of my groups. I may have to reassess each group, but don't want to set that as a thing for ALL of my groups.

message 41: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12924 comments I always like to hear from you guys. Everyone else I could take or leave. LOL

message 42: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11692 comments Well, one of my questions got answered. I haven't looked at my email yet to see if there's a notification there, but I did get a GR notification that someone else commented on one I'd commented on a while back.

message 43: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11692 comments ...but how and when and where I set it up that way, I have no idea!
