Hello lovely members!

Today I received a message from the new GR Community Manager, with an exciting opportunity!

'Hi Rinn,
This May, Goodreads will be celebrating Summer Reading with a weeklong event focused on great books to read this summer from a variety of genres. As a moderator of a successful Goodreads group in one of the genres we plan to feature, we’d like to showcase your awesome group Dragons & Jetpacks in our coverage.

Can your group recommend three books for readers to add their their summer reading plans? We think readers (and other groups) would love to hear your smart recommendations! You may want to create a poll for your group in order to make your selections.

Please send me a message if you plan to participate at your earliest convenience. The deadline to complete the form is May 5.

Thanks for being a Goodreads moderator!

Best,
Emily
Community Manager, Goodreads'

To make this easier to narrow down our choices, let's choose 3 of our favourite group reads. I'll leave this open until 5th May and then message Emily :)

So let me know your great summer reads and why, and then I'll choose 3 (either most popular or with the best reasons) to submit! :D

Milou | 102 comments I second Age of Myth, also because the sequel is coming out soon so now would be a great time to catch up...

message 6: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1691 comments I will second Age of Myth because Michael J. Sullivan is such an awesome member of our group.

I would also like to strongly recommend The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and The Fifth Season as they were our book of the year winners.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin | 229 comments I love Age Of Myth so I'm going second it as well.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm going to nominate Behind the Throne. This is super fun and has a lot of diversity.
Behind the Throne (The Indranan War #1) by K.B. Wagers

Looks to me like two definite favourites , then an interesting selection after that. No calls for Cinders or Snowcrash then :-p

message 17: by Paul (new)

message 18: by Sean (new)

Sean (redbeard007) | 95 comments She doesn't say which genre though she plans to use our suggestions in. It could be Science Fiction or Fantasy. Should we then maybe ensure we at least give 1 suggestion for both genres?

I would definitely also support/suggest Age of Myth (The Legends of the First Empire, #1) by Michael J. Sullivan & The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1) by Becky Chambers as newer books. I would also suggest Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson as a classic book.

It would be both/or really, whatever the group feels is good! I think I will pick one of each, and then the 3rd will be whatever feels the right choice :)

Ready Player One and Uprooted, I'd say The Martian too but that's probably been read by most people that plan on reading it...

So hard to pick just a few, so many good books:
The Lies of Locke Lamora
The Night Circus
Prince of Thorns
Promise of Blood
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet

Now I'm wishing we'd read The Summer Dragon.

I'm fine with whatever we pick, though seeing that this is our chance to be in the spotlight of awesomeness I'd think it be best to not pick something too mainstream or cliché. Not saying anything that's been said are those things but you get what I'm saying.

Tom (riptorn41) The Fifth Season!

Lancer , don't people who try to be niche and not a cliche usually end up being the worst cliche. Don't want people thinking we're hipsters ;-).
Mainstream and lovin it :-p

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 3535 comments Mod
The Martian, too -- forgot that one.

Rinn (rinnsohma) | 3456 comments Mod
Okay, so I think we have two clear nominations: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and Age of Myth.

Make your most compelling cases for the third book! ;) I may send our nominations later tonight, just in case I don't have time tomorrow.

message 48: by Ed (new)

Ed Erwin | 112 comments Well, that is one SF and one Fantasy, so what could be the 3rd? Maybe Steampunk? Maybe YA? In that case "The Invisible Library" would fit, and got some love above.

message 49: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
Retribution Falls for book 3
A - Because it will make a poor Canadian happy.
B - Because it covers both genres to some degree.
C - Probably an author a lot of us only know because of the group and Sir Lancers persistence.

message 50: by Audrey, Queen of the Potato People (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 3535 comments Mod
I was going to say Invisible Library or Retribution Falls. And Retribution Falls is less "mainstream."
