If you're new to Great African Reads, here's a snapshot of what's going on and how to find your way around.
Check out the Tour d'Afrique, our longest running project that has seen us travel right across the African continent since 2008. Every two months*, we visit a new country and read a book from or set in said country. Find our more in the Tour d'Afrique folders: Here is where we solicit recommendations for each tour stop and here is where we discuss the books.
[*Well trips don't always go as planned in Africa, so the trip was a little stuck on some rocky roads for a while, but reinforcements came by, and the Tour D'Afrique is now back on track with the Z finish line within sight.]
In 2017 we are visiting: Jan-June: Tanzania, May-July: Zambia, July-Aug: Tunisia, Aug-Sept: Uganda, Sept-Oct: Western Sahara, Nov-Dec: Zimbabwe -> FINISH LINE!
(The finish line also mean we'll be discussing how to continue the tour, more on that later this year...)

The group also takes on more thematic reading - like the literature of a single country (Kenya 2016, Nigeria 2015 or Contemporary Lit - we are planning a new theme for those group reads here, join the discussion!

In addition to these regular projects, we have a folder for our member authors to engage readers, promote their work, and avoid spamming our threads.

Or if you want to just discuss any book to do with Africa, feel free to do that in the Great African Reads: Books section.

Please shout out for further clarification if you're not sure where to post stuff or how to find things! :)

Anarchist | 1 comments It seems fun and makes reading more enjoyable and memorable. It will, I think, help reader to understand local environment when and where the book was written. It is a great idea to read books. I salute and appreciate those who took time and energy to create this idea and materialized the idea into a well functioning group. I am new to this group. Hopefully, will join the tour as well.

John Farebrother | 13 comments No-one's asked, but my three favourite African books are Op ver paaie, The African Trilogy and Prison d'Afrique. Cinq ans dans les geôles de Guinée. They all hail from different parts of the continent, and show the colonial experience from a different perspective and at a different time. Cold-war Africa and its aftermath is also a recurrent theme in this book on the Balkans: The Damned Balkans - a refugee road trip:.

Penny Toit (pennydutoit) | 2 comments When are you traveling Namibia ? Or have I missed that ? I would love to meet up when u visit. I live in Swakopmund Namibia and as first time Author I am a bit overwhelmed with all the new rules of being an author and reader.
