What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I've been trying to remember the name of a book I loved in the late 80's - can you help?!

All i can recall - at a time of intense, enforced social division, the young female protagonist lives on the plush side of a huge fence, spoilt by her parents but feeling that she's missing something. The only time she comes into contact with those of a lower social order is when they are imported in by buses to do manual labour. One night she and her friends sneak out of their gilded cage for a night of partying on the rough side of town. They get in trouble and she meets a boy who helps them, falls for him instantly and runs away to be with him - opening her eyes to the imbalance of their worlds.

The only detail I recall is that she took his mother a lipstick as a present.
