Ready Player One is a 2011 dystopian science-fiction novel, and the debut novel by Ernest Cline.
The book was published on August 16, 2011. An audiobook was released the same day; it was narrated by Wil Wheaton, who was mentioned briefly in one of the chapters.

A film adaptation, directed by Steven Spielberg, is currently in production, and slated to premiere in spring 2018.

Started it today, and couldn't do anything else once into it.
Virtual world, video games, treasure hunt, add movies TV and song references, Guntorrent!

All packed into one. Unbelievable!

Is it similar to Enders Game? After reading that, scared to start with this one.

Somewhat similar. High on video games and their references since Nintendo and Atari games of 80s. I don't think you'll enjoy this (might be grossly wrong!)

Yes please enlighten me with the references. Don't know most of it, including many from video games. But can relate to them based on other arcade games played in childhood :)

I'm 30% into it, and might not pick it again today. This has hijacked everything I am reading now.

On another note, try it again tonight and you might locate the audiobook somewhere ;) #justSaying

Jaya | 5078 comments Listening to it right now. only at 1-2%
Video games not my thing.
What i'l do is start listing the songs/movies from the next post onwards (that's mostly so that i can recall). And compile a playlist if feasible. In all likelihood i'l miss a lot of references am sure

Jaya | 5078 comments Music
Oingo Boingo: Dead Man's Party
Billy Idol: Dancing with Myself

Movies
John Huges' (need to read more if there's anything specific)

Even the movie references went above my head. Could only get a few - Ferris Buellers Day Off, Monty Python... I don't have this type of taste in movies.
For music, I'm going to rely on your playlist. Thanks :)

Look at the way he's avoiding plot holes.... By giving them away with a valid description.
Gaping in awe at the perfect world visualization he's created. Damn good!

In my 3rd year graduation days, three of us tried our hands at game programming. Created an amateur 2D game.
That's one (and there are many) of the reasons this book has struck a chord with my soul.
I know what they mean while discussing Halliday's game plan. The way a game developer decides on landscapes and avatars. Easter eggs off course :)

And that arcade game description where you play on inserting coins. Goosebump moments :)

While reading this, recalled that I've seen that screen a million times - "Ready Player One"
