Marcus Vinicius | 202 comments Great expectation, Simone! I think you should expect that.

Good point, Simone - I forgot about the police detective somewhere along the line, but did expect him to play more of a role.

Interesting catch Simone - the police did just disappear. Highly unlikely given that the victim was so important.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 686 comments One thing I missed was why does Manderson hate Marlowe? Jealousy?

Marcus Vinicius | 202 comments I think so, Carol. In fact, Manderson didn't have a voice in the book. It's difficult to be certain.

I think he thought Marlowe was having an affair with his wife? Or did I get that wrong?

Sandy | 4205 comments Mod
As I remember Manderson saw his wife talking with Marlowe, perhaps comforting him after a failed romance, and assumed they were having an affair.

That could be it. I knew I had missed something.

Simone made a good point about the police disappearing.

I loved the character of Mabel Manderson. I thought she had a lot of depth.

I also thought the affair was assumed, rather than real. I don't think she could have had an affair, as she was this sort of idealised wife and woman.

Yes- he misinterpreted what he saw, and what according to Mabel was mere sympathy she was showing for Marlowe (?).

Yes, I remember they were just friends and she was comforting him over a broken romance, as Sandy said, but Manderson jumped to the wrong conclusion.

Sandy | 4205 comments Mod
I never thought about this while reading but we only have Mabel word that there was no affair. Our only 'proof' is that they went their separate ways after the murder.

Marcus Vinicius | 202 comments Besides that, we know that they didn't have at that time a good relationship. In this context, Mendelson "conclusions" didn't seems absurd.

Marcus Vinicius | 202 comments Manderson, not Mendelson!

True- perhaps Bentley was leaving the possibility open of her as the killer....
