When you open up your TBR, what is the first book on the list? How long has it been there?

Mine is The Golem and the Jinni and it's been on my TBR since July 6, 2014.

Angus | 152 comments Mine is The Raven Boys and it has been there since I joined Goodreads a couple years ago. I've been putting it off for ages, as it seems like something I'd really enjoy but I just don't want to be disappointed! And now I've left it far too long and hyped it up too much for myself :( Maybe one day haha also The Golem and the Jinni looks really interesting, but again I've never got around to it!

Bill | 2150 comments It was The Gathering Storm for the last few years but since I started that on Monday it is now A Farewell to Arms. It's been on my tbr since March of 2013.

This post made me realize that I have 22 books left on my tbr from the day I joined Goodreads. Might have to make it a goal at some point to knock those off the list.

Tammie | 5951 comments The Way of Kings It has been on my list since May 28, 2010. It's not that I don't want to read it. I just decided I wanted to wait until more of the books in the series were released. Also it's a huge book that will take a lot of time to read and I have to be in the right frame of mind for that.

That is my favorite book of all time! I've read both books in the series twice and will be rereading this one again in July. Plan to read Words of Radiance before Oathbringer releases. :)

message 8: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 1578 comments Mine is The Blue Sword and it has been there since Nov 11, 2012 which is only a few months after I joined goodreads.

I have a lot of shelves on goodreads, so I'm not sure this is actually the one that's been added to my TBR the longest, but it's the oldest one that is still on my "to-read" shelf.

I will eventually read it for sure. I just need more of the series released first. I tend to lose interest if I have to wait too long between books.

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I only joined last year but my first TBR book is Airborn by Kenneth Oppel which I added on march 2016 this was at a time when I avoided popular epic fantasy books like the plague and wanted something steampunk or a bit of romance with Leviathan after failing got into epic fantasy and her I am

I didn't pick this up because I couldn't find an ebook of it I may pick it up eventually who knows

I've reordered my shelf several times so the first book really isn't valid. I've also setup custom shelves so that not every book on my TBR is in that shelf. I have "owned to read" and "to continue" shelves as examples.

But Herald of the Storm is the first book for the sake of answering the question and it was added July 28th, 2016. I reordered it to first because I haven't started that series, the library doesn't own it and with those two criteria it's the one I'd most like to start.

Mine is Touched by an Alien by Gini Koch hahahaha. This was added 2/25/2013. The only reason I haven't gotten around to this one was because I was trying to show some restraint and finish some of the other UFs I'd started. I still really, really want to read it haha. It sounds like just the kind of bizarre UF I'd love.

Touched by an Alien

Mine's The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb. Added in 2012

How things have changed, I guess I wasn't that jaded back then

I'm reading it right now. It was Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fiction and Illusions from 2012 25th November I was sick of seeing the book all the time.

Though now it means that The Pillars of the Earth November 2012 is my oldest book on my TBR. It's the last book I have on my list from that year. So I am hoping to read it by the end of the year.

Funny and it's from the same year. Did you join in 2012 as well then? Do you own a copy as well? We could buddy read later in the year.

message 19: by Margret, Caladan Brood Face (new)

Margret | 3168 comments Mod
Yes that was when I joined, and had no idea what genre was mine. At the time I would only read a few books a year. I *was reading about 25-30 a year until two years ago when I started pledging for the Goodreads challenge, then it's jumped to the 130's two years in a row haha.

Pillars is on my TBR as well.....maybe a non-fantasy group read in the fall? Margret and I have done some historical fiction with Saxon Stories but that does have an element of myth if not magic.

Pretty much I've put it off because it's a thousand pages and a series!

Yeah it's not like you would wanna put the time commitment in on a 2 book x 1000 page per series. Totally not your style

*COUGH Malazan COUGH*

Malazan is why I didn't want to take on more series with books that size. Once I'm done with Fall of Light I'll open it up.

That's exactly why I keep putting it off. Someone I know committed to reading Malazan.

Excellent!

Do you want to buddy read in another group as it isn't a fantasy book?

October would work for me?

Let's do it here there's no reason why we can't read the odd non-fantasy book!

Cool. Let me know when would suit. I'm actually quite excited to know I'll now be reading it this year. Haha though then it will make Middlemarch my oldest book. That can be next year's objective.

message 29: by Chris (new)

Chris (murphy44) | 710 comments I've only been on goodreads for about 8 months now, so not many old tbr. However, pillars has been sitting on one of my in house bookshelves for a good amount of time...The inside cover says 2002 and I'm pretty sure that I bought it new...

message 30: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments I joined Goodreads in 2015 and the first books I set on my TBR list that day were the first 3 books of Lightbringer and Truth or Beard by Penny Reid. I have honestly forgotten about that one and don't even remember why i set it as to read, though I looked at the summary and it seems interesting.

message 31: by TAMRA (new)

TAMRA L | 3 comments Mine is House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski. It was added on January 3, 2017. But I only just started using goodreads this year.

message 32: by John (last edited Jun 18, 2017 06:44AM) (new)

John Compton | 163 comments I have 8 all with the start date of when I joined Goodreads (last year). The one at the top is the 2nd Lightbringer book, but it is not high on my priority list now.

Other comments mentioned above:
1. I read Pillars of the Earth many years ago and liked it quite a bit (that era in Europe is neat to read about). The follow on is about the same castle many, many years later. I have not read it.
2. I read The Way of Kings (absolutely my favorite book of all time - so far), but like you, I held off on Words of Radiance until the 3rd book comes out. I plan to re-read Way of Kings, and then hit the other two (in between Jarek's Buddy Read on Wheel of Time).

Wonderland Wanderer | 36 comments I just received my copy of Blackwing
I just cannot wait to start this one.

message 34: by Kayleigh (new)

Kayleigh | 26 comments The first book on my list is Love in the Time of Cholera, added in 2012.

A fantasy book, not counting classics, that has been on my TBR the longest is The Princess Bride, also added in 2012.

Looking at my TBR I also realized The Way of Shadows has been on my TBR since 2012. I own a copy and I still don't know why I haven't gotten to it yet.

message 35: by Rob (new)

Rob (nefariasbredd) | 2418 comments Gosh. I have like 189 books on my to-read list.

Anyway oldest on the list is from 2012 - Windhaven by Lisa Tuttle and George R.R. Martin.

message 36: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments Reaper's Gale has been on my list since January 2009, when I first joined GR.

It hasn't always been the first. Other Malazans that I have read since joining GR have fallen off, of course. I do believe that the Malazan books were among the very first that I clicked "want to read" for after I joined.

message 37: by Candace (new)

Candace (cprimackqcom) One Hundred Years of Solitude added in January, 2010, is the first book added that is still unread. I bought the book last year in preparation to read it this year;although it is looking like it might be next year. I'm getting there!

I can't believe you're still only 60% there. RG is a very good book. Toll the Hounds for me is the weakest book of the series but wow that ending. Dust of Dreams I like more than most people. Then The Crippled God is tied for best of series.

message 39: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments I had a hard time powering through that series. The drop in quality after book 3 set me back too. I do need to get back to it, if I can ever free up my reading time for it.

Books 2, 3, 6 and 10 are the best. I'm surprised you didn't like the bonehunters more.

message 41: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments I did, especially by the end. It just exhausted me lol. I needed a break with lighter fare and never got back around to it.

That's what happens when I keep joining these groups that add 4-5 buddy reads every day ;)

Malazan is completely exhausting. Keeping to the one book a month pace I needed the rest of the month to gear up for the next.

message 44: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments I do think I need to readjust my reading plans and prioritize Malazan. At least the next book.

Chris you could always wait for Samir and I ;-). We're currently reading book 4 House of Chains. Though at my pace Reapers Gale is probably a 2018 book.

message 46: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments I might do that. Or even if I do get to Reapers before then, I'll likely need a break you can catch up with..:)
