This is an adult non-fiction written by a rancher in the west (I think Montana, but maybe Idaho or Wyoming) who befriends a young coyote and learns they are actually essential to the ecology and not the vermin other ranchers make them out to be. He becomes a champion of coyote conservation.
It's killing me that I can't remember this book because it was a great book. I read it maybe 10 years ago and I think it was probably written no earlier than the 90s. Pretty sure the word "coyote" is in the title, but searches for "coyote" turn up so many unrelated hits I've despaired of finding it.
