Ugh. Is it just me??

100% this. What keeps me going? The thought that my nieces or grandnieces or other women will pick up one of my books one day and not feel that literary slap when they read something.
I can see the heroe's statement as meaning to keep an eye on the woman and make sure she doesn't get in trouble.
In my next installment to my story, the hero will bring the heorine back into her house and tell her brother to make sure she stays puts.
Where I live, Iit's nothing for me to see a parent walking with a child that is sporting a leash. It's for their protection. I would do the same for my children.
Erin, I understand not being able to finish a book, because of something that I didn't like, but maybe you could skip arpund in the book to see what kind of relationship the black woman and hero developed. They probably became friends and he has her back.
I don't see the statement as being harmful.
If you watch western movies and shows like I do, then you should know that the hero tends to do stuff to the hereoine, such as whips her in the front of people. I have seen a movie, where a father has allowed the hero to whip his daughter in the front of him. They weren't even a couple, but they liked one another and the heroine was stubborn. The hero didnt want her being along with a guy he didn't like. it's a John Wayne Movie.

So I love western/cowboy romances right? If it's IR on top of that I'm ecstatic ha ha. Anyhoo I was reading and enjoying a novella in which the heroine and her best friend go to a bar with some friends. The best friend, who is black, has too much to drink and is strong-armed by a drunk a**hole who won't take no for an answer. The heroine (white) is grateful when her ex-flame (white) rescues the black best friend and saves the day. Yayyy right?
Okay the following day the ex shows up to talk to the heroine. He spots the best friend outside and tells the heroine "You need to keep a leash on her."
*insert record scratch sound*
What?? Call me sensitive but it is for this very reason that I choose to write romances about black women. I can't control what other authors choose to do but I can do my part to tell our stories with as much dignity and creativity as I possibly can.
Ugh. I couldn't finish the book.
