Is the violence in Zom-B a bit over the top?

I recently read Zom-B and was quite shocked by the amount of strong gore and violence in it, especially for a book written for young adults. I still believe that some areas of the book are just as violent as in "The Walking Dead". Whats more, is that there's pictures to accompany the violent scenes! If the book was to be turned into a film/tv adaption it would most likely again a 15-18 BBFC rating.

I didn't notice, but I am an adult-die-hard-zombie-fiction-walking-dead-fan.
Considering that it is a novel about zombies one should expect violence.
