Teresa (teresatiger) | 3 comments Hi everyone, I adore The Dresden Files, enjoy the Sookie Stackhouse books and love early Cal Leandros (before the author went off the rails after book 5), as well as anthologies like "Wolfsbane and Mistletoe." I would really love some suggestions for similar series or anthologies with that kind of lore and atmosphere.

That said, romance is the thing I'm least interested in and I normally just take the romantic subplots in stride if I like the overall universe. But I'm definitely not looking for stories that revolve primarily around love and relationships. I much prefer action, adventure or mystery, morally gray characters (preferably snarky but badass male leads like Dresden and Leandros) and a deep exploration of the mythology of the author's world.

Can anyone recommend a series along those lines that I should check out?

Thanks!

First of all, YAY!! Someone who also feels Cal went off the rails. I used to love that series, but not so much any more sigh.

I wonder if you might like Elizabeth Hunter Her newest novella is the start of a new series. A Ghost in the Glamour: A Linx & Bogie Story I really enjoyed it.

Teresa (teresatiger) | 3 comments I'll check that out; thanks for the suggestion. And yes, sadly Cal started out so good and just kept getting better up through Roadkill, which was one of my favorites. I started feeling less enthused with Blackout and then the books after that got continuously worse. I feel like once Thurman became a "full time writer" instead of working a day job and writing her novels on the side, she got really sloppy and just started cranking out repetitive garbage. It's really too bad because I had such high hopes for the series, but at least we got 5 great books out of it first. I tried her others like Chimera and Trick of the Light as well, and it was just more of the same nonsense. Different names, almost identical characters. It's like she doesn't know how to write anything else.

Maddy Barone (maddybarone) | 6 comments One of my favorite characters in the Cal Leandros series was brother Nico. He was more than Cal's brother, he was his biggest supporter through everything. A great swordsman, with tremendous self-control, a moral compass and a long blond braid. He stood out as a very interesting contrast to Cal. Really too bad about that series.

Another series I used to love a lot was Laurel K Hamilton's Anita Blake. After Obsidian Butterfly it went down hill. My opinion. Others may disagree.

Nancy D Miz-Firefly aka Sparky (miz-firefly) Since Butcher is a fave for you I think you'll like Patricia Briggs, Mark Del Franco and Faith Hunter. For grittier fiction like Thurman try J.F Lewis, Justin Gustainis and Richard Kadrey,

Sana Zameer (sanazameer) Have you tried the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. It's similar to the Dresden Files, with a male lead.
