H Hello,
As you may have heard, RPO is getting a movie adaption. I personally think that It would suck.
I formed my opinion on this based on what happened to the 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' story. The trilogy was an extremely awesome adventure. The movie on the other hand sucked. If we compare RPO and Miss peregrine's (book) story we'd notice that it's easier to make a movie about kids with peculiar powers in different time lines (with the current movie making tech) compared to making a movie that has a dystopian setting and an in-game setting which has many worlds and a variety of game worlds and spoilers alert a freaking IRL Rivendale, hence the cost to make RPO a decent movie will be very high, and I imagine that they don't have a large budget to give the story just.
For me, the only reason to watch the movie (If it comes out) is to support RPO because it's one of my all time favorite books.

Please share your opinions on this, and if possible give me a reason to look forward to this movie.

(PS: I was too lazy to recheck what I wrote for grammatical and spelling errors :p lol)

Andrew Pegg I have high hopes only because Spielberg is directing it.

H I think that the story can be given just, if it was animated (Japanese Anime style not a Pixar like style). It will give them more freedom in making the different planets and worlds, that would help cut down the cost (like the cost for making the different shooting sets).

David H I'm afraid I can't give you a solid reason for high hopes other than as stated above Steven Frigging Spielberg. But I have to see it just in the off chance that they actually pull this off. Much like you, I loved this book, and as a gamer whose looked forward to VR for the last 25 years, I feel it's my duty to see this movie Lol

Dizzy Maybe it'll turn out like The Martian instead of Miss Peregrine's?

Worst case scenario is that it ends up like a live-action Sword Art Online.

Daniel I Almost Cried When I Saw The Movie Trailer. My Wish Came True!

Tiara I agree that the movie version is questionable. I hated how they lost so much in translation of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. They made an attempt, but it was just too ambitious and/or low-budget. RPO's movie prospect does sound exciting, though (haven't seen the trailer yet).

Jake I saw a trailer for the movie last Saturday, have to admit just in that snippet I was disappointed. No mention of a contest, no mention of nerd culture, no mention of Halliday, instead it was depicted as a video game action movie. There appears to be a huge car chase scene with sixers. It showed a lot of gun fire from an orc avatar, weird fights between robots.

I don't mind changes to a book, but it seems like this might be a World War Z situation, where a movie takes a popular book title, a few concepts from the book, and then completely ignores the source material.

Kyle Plump I am a little skeptical of the movie. One of my favorite parts of the book was the references, and I'm afraid they will downplay this for the 'lowest common denominator'. So people who can't appreciate the references won't get lost during the movie.

Also, It bums me out that soon when I talk to people about Ready Player One, they will respond with: "Hey! I saw that MOVIE"

Claire I wonder how true to the characters descriptions they will be? Cause Wade is basically bald, hairless, and chubby at the beginning.

Blake Porter I think the way to approach it is to recognize that movies are never quite as good as the book. Just because a movie is made for RPO, it will not take anything away from how incredible the book is. True fans and true nerds will understand the deep doctrine of nerdom only found in the book, but alas, not everyone can be as cool as we are haha. Regardless of how it does as a movie, this will be in my top 5 favorite books of all time.

Claire Agreed, you can never perfectly adapt a book to the screen, its just not possible. Im still looking forward to watching it when it comes out though!

Sarah It was my favorite book that I have read in a long time and I will be super bummed if the movie doesn't do it justice. I'm actually optimistic about the movie though, which is not typical of me!

If you look at the end of the trailer, you can see someone (probably Wade) turning the crystal key in a lock. I think that this is Spielberg's way of telling us about the contest.

I think (and desperately hope) that RPO(TM!) will be great. Naturally, they will have to change a few aspects of the story (such as the games of joust and pac-man) simply because it wouldn't be the most interesting thing to watch and they would need to increase the tension and overall view-ability of those particular scenes. Those changes, in my opinion would be welcome and entirely necessary. Other than those particular scenes, the trailer implies that they are staying true to the original story and will not be changing much else. The only major thing that could ruin the movie at that point would be bad acting which I highly doubt as being a possibility seeing as how it's such a high-budget film. In conclusion, I have high hopes for what the movie adaptation will hold, and I hope that it won't let me down.

Alexander Smith I think it will be a good movie that only follows the book loosely. However do hope for a great movie that follows the book extremely well. It will be interesting how many more details they can throw in with a movie.

I mean, looking at the trailer, the movie seems cool, but it's a lot different from what I imagined when reading the book. A lot of character description seems off, and I wonder what'll happen when Wade shaves his hair off. When is it going to be released?

Beets I liked the trailer. I think it will be quite different from the book but I hope it will still be good with changes that work for the screen.

Tyler Davis I was really worried when this was announced, but the more I think about it, and the more each trailer shows, I'm not as worried as I was. I think the best thing they are doing with this movie is moving on from just 80s pop culture, and adding in things from today's pop culture as well. We see Tracer from Overwatch in the newest trailer. I have accepted that this will not be like the book, but more just based on the same outline. I still have high hopes for the movie. Plus like mentioned above, Steven Spielberg, but that goes without saying.

H I went to see the movie with a friend (He never read the book). He enjoyed it, but from my PoV, I really disliked it. They ruined most of the good stuff about the story. I was going to list everything that I hated about it, but I cant be bothered to type all the negatives. I'm just sad, It's my favourite book till this day. Just Disappointed............

David H I dug the movie, yes it was a departure from the book but if you look at it logically, parts of it would not have translated well to film (thing watching a guy play Pac Man, or walking around in a deserted D&D dungeon, or typing out on a text base RPG) and the other things that were left out like Oasis functionality etc etc there just isn't time for a 400 page book to fit into a 2 hour (and change) movie. Over all I thought it was really fun and well done. Spielberg did not fail me :-)

Lindsay Seddon David wrote: "I dug the movie, yes it was a departure from the book but if you look at it logically, parts of it would not have translated well to film (thing watching a guy play Pac Man, or walking around in a ..."

Agree completely. I was slightly miffed to see almost everything changed slightly but I actually think it was a great move.
Die-hard fans of the book and the games featured were never going to be 100% happy with the adaptation, so why try to make it identical? Instead, make it a great film in its own right and by having Ernest Cline be a major part of the writing, they did they best they possibly could.

Will Once This may be controversial but IMHO the movie was miles better than the book. The movie wasn't perfect - too much Spielberg schmaltz - but at least we didn't have to endure the poor writing of the novel.

T I hated the movie so much. Honest to god hated it. Because it was a video game movie that messed up video game logic. Its structure was all over the place too. I mean, it's supposed to be a build up right? And yet the car chase is like the most action packed thing in the movie (considering the final battle wasn't a whole lot of screen time). So many nitpicks and plot holes and unnecessary things. So many things added. So much meh...

Yeah I thought the same. There was no real progression or build up through the competition. Especially with the fact the main five characters weren't facing off against each other at all, and the IOI found the third gate with no trouble or build up. The lack of suspense and adventure missed the main draw of the book (for me) but I assume it was done for film/pacing reasons.

Ashongus I know right! I watched the movie recently - it. was. terrible.
They changed way too much for it to seem like a movie version of the book. Literally, the entire plot is changed. I get it, its pretty much impossible to have everything be the same from the book, but they could at least try to make it similar. For example, the first challenge. A race. Really?! The point was that Halliday wanted a schoolboy to find the egg. And they kept out the teleportation fees. And the fact that Wade Watts would NOT be able to buy a car in-game. Or that he'd care about aunt Alice. The woman abused him, so I'm pretty sure he wouldn't even bother warning her. So, yeah. They changed TOO much stuff from the book.

Also, I don't really like how art3mis is portrayed in the movie. She's quite different from the book. I'd also like it if they kept the actual way Wade met art3mis.

In my opinion, the movie would be decent if it was a standalone movie. However, it's not.

Honestly, it seemed like it took a week to find the egg.

I absolutely agree with you.

Paige This was the equivalent of reading the foot notes and creating a long winded book report/ presentation.....I think you're getting an F Mr. Spielberg, I don't believe you read the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, one of my favorites of late... I walked OUT of the movie

message 30: by Will (new) - rated it 1 star

Will Once Joshua - that's a coincidence ... I loved the movie but couldn't finish the book.

Jacqueline Luna (this is an inanimate person from the future of 2018)
The movie wasn't too bad, although I definitely agree with your statement. Essentially its a Hollywood movie, so they change the main characters from relatable to overtly hot, the romance becomes cringe worthy, some parts become inevitable boring, but the art and action scenes were gorgeous. And in my opinion Spielberg made the movie cheesy and romanticized/glorified a post apocalyptic world that was actually quite horrible to be in.

Madyson The book was so good, it's definitely a book I'd read again. But the movie honestly was okay, even though the plot was different, if you are expecting it to be just like the book then you will be disappointed. I bet the only reason they changed it was because they wanted a bigger audience not just the people who read the book. Also I would definitely read the book before you see the movie because of the fact that there is way more in the book.

Charlet Great book! The whole Helen is a girl thing is kinda weird but besides that and the revolting language I really enjoyed it the whole plot was great :) Movie was pretty good as well

Lauren Reber This is one of those "books made into movies" situations where I feel that is is necessary to read the book and watch the movie as two stand alone pieces, (or perhaps that the movie is simply inspired by the book and not a direct representation.) I started the book and one chapter in decided to watch the movie because my husband was and I didn't want him to wait. I loved the movie and thought it was great and entertaining. As I started to read the book it became clear fairly quickly that the similarities and plot line (for the movie) stopped at a very premature point in which Hollywood take began to take over.

On its own I think both were great. I loved the book and could not put it down.

Jake I saw the movie and must say I found it to be terrible. The action sequences I thought were uninspired and while there were parts that were visually interesting (Gundam fighting Mechagodzilla for instance was cool), but most was just meh (the entire race sequence).

The plot jumped around and felt like the whole movie happened in a single week or less. Character development was pretty much nonexistant.

The shining sequence I found fun, but the rest of the challenges were very mediocre. Ending with Adventure, in the context of the movie also made very little sense, as the movie doesn't mention or show pretty much any retro stuff up to that point.

My girlfriend, who had never read the book tried to watch it with me, but found it extremely boring and was happy when it was over.

I wish that they would have done the same way they made the Lord of the Rings movie. Each key could have been a movie. That would have been way better.

Ms. Lauren, that's some good thinking. I totally agree. They should've asked you lol
