Great article and video about Amalie Bruun, the singer/creator of the black metal band Myrkur. When the band first hit the scene in 2015 i was blown away as were quite a few metal fans. So much so that the metal media took notice right away and gave the project a lot of praise.

But with that came with the detractors as well, those both in the metal scene and fans a like who were angry, dismissive, and ignorant to what Myrkur were doing. Ive actually witnessed some of the online threats she got over the last couple of years and have been very outspoken to those who would cowardly attack her in that way.

But the article and the video give you a glimpse of the artistic vision she has created with the band which has taken elements from the black metal scene over the years and combined them in a different arrangement and presentation. Even for those who are not into metal this is good little read with a couple minutes worth of video of how she explains what its like to be a woman in heavy metal music. Here is a snippet from the article,

"“There’s nothing scarier than a screaming woman.”

Amalie Bruun, a 32-year-old classically trained musician from Copenhagen and the one-woman force behind Myrkur, says it’s challenging being a female artist in “black metal,” a music genre that is both male-dominated and widely misunderstood.

Critics of the music — an extreme form of heavy metal that features shrieking, fast tempos and distorted guitars — think it’s “just about Satan” or “a little bit idiotic,” says Bruun.

“It’s not seen at the artistic level of other musical genres, but anyone who plays it can tell you otherwise because it’s extremely hard,” she says.

Bruun compares the guitar work of black metal to violin players in a classical orchestra, and says she gravitates to it because there is beauty in the rawness and harshness of the sound. Myrkur means “darkness” in Icelandic."

Marvel Comics get a new hero. Amka is an Inuit teenager from Pangnirtung, Nunavut, Canada.

How exciting. I'm glad to see another bold, empowering young character being developed. I usually do wonder what Marvel Comics will come up with next

James Corprew Not sure if this will make the news at some point but if it does i will be sure to post it here. Anyway, im kind of bragging about my wife who currently works as a buyer for TE Connectivity. Her job requires her to order supplies and materials for a couple of ships that go out to sea and lay cable lines for phone and internet.

She has been doing this job for a couple of years and is the most efficient of the group that she works with (at least according to her boss). She was initially told by her boss (who happens to be female) that she was going to be groomed for the management job once her current boss retired. But about 7-8 months ago she was passed up for promotion by a young 20 something man who has no management experience nor purchasing/buying experience in their dept.

Needless to say she was beyond devastated because she had worked so hard to take on extra tasks and took on a test project to try and broaden her knowledge for the company. Anyway, long story short she began looking into the idea of transferring as a cable splicer on one of the ships. Now, that field is heavily dominated by men and even though some women in the past have attempted to do the job they have not succeeded.

But, my wife recently applied and got the job which not only pays her 3 times as much money as she was currently making but a lot of the guys who she had been talking to about the job are very encouraging and excited that she is joining their crew. This all also takes place during a month at their company which is deemed "inclusive and diversity" month so the excitement is very fervent for her and the company.

My wife was a little worried that i might not be able to handle her being gone a month or two at a time and that i might worry about her being at sea but i have been nothing short of proud and supportive of her in this endeavor. She's a hard worker, quick smart, and strong willed so i have no doubt that she will succeed at this. If she does succeed she will become the first ever female cable splicer at her company which is not only a big deal for her and myself but for women in general.

Anyway, just wanted to share that and as i said if it starts to make the news in a few months i will keep people updated.

Cheers!

Why did her female boss choose an idiot young man for the promotion instead?

Applause!

Congratulations to your wife, James! That's AWESOME!

I love her fierce determination and her acknowledgement of her self worth!

James Corprew @Jasmine.

From what she was told at the time was "she was to good at her current job". which meant to her and I that because she does twice the amount of work compared to others in her dept that they could not afford to promote her. It's ridiculous reasoning but the fact they tried to hide it initially by posting the job as something else just shows how shady it was. But she is looking forward to her new job and is determined to succeed.

grumble, grumble, grumble.

The old:
- We need you to work at your top to show us your dedication. Prove to us that you want the promotion
VS
- This person is too invaluable where they are, we cannot change that or we would be screwed in the long term.

That's bull-turds. May the company be stymied with idiocy and loss of sales.

The judge who handled the Standford Rape trial, and sentenced rapist Brock Turner to only six months, was elected out of office via petition.

"Such elections are rare - the last time a US judge was recalled was in 1977."

"We voted today against impunity for high status perpetrators of sexual assault and domestic violence," chair of Recall Persky, Michelle Dauber said."

This is bad from England. A backward, medieval country. Rapists are getting off just because some falsely claim that evidence was withheld from their defense lawyers. They seem to forget the trust should always be with the victim! As it is in the US, at least at colleges under title IX.

This is the problem with the courts. The rapists play these legal games and get off when we all know they are guilty. Women do not make up rape charges for fun.

Its terrifying to see England is now defending rapists.

Wait a minute, England is not defending rapists. I think you are making a dangerous generality. Through this way hate may be borned.

I do not understand: " As it is in the US, at least at colleges under title IX. ", could you explain it to me please? :)

" This is the problem with the courts. The rapists play these legal games and get off when we all know they are guilty. "

Yes... that is outraging to see a rapist or another criminal (whatever the gender, nationality, majority or minority etc... he/she belongs to) getting away from justice... that is sad :'( hopefully more ways to counter them and actually to prevent those crimes to happen will be set up. Some people are already lost but the new generations may be full of hope ;)

Hello there!

Today I heard from my sister that a couple of days ago being transgender was not considered as a mental illness anymore by the world health organization! :)

Have a great day!

Yes, the ICD-11 will not have transgender and gender-diverse as a mental illness anymore.

^^That's definitely some progress. (And also, the ICD-10 was introduced in 1992, so it was really time for a revision...)

message 169: by [deleted user] (new)

Indeed!

I also heard that in France homosexual couples fought to be able to adopt, they were (apparently) told that only could adopt old children or children with disability. When they ask why, the woman in charge of the case (apparently replied) that they kind of knew what was being handicapped... I heard that story yesterday so I could not check the words but I think that there is probably a bit of truth.
Anyway my sister was outraged just like I was upset but I try to focus on a positive point: now homosexual couples may adopt children in France. There is still a long way but it is moving :)

This week a few nobel prize were announced.
Physics: Donna Strickland is one of the laureate. The last woman who won the nobel prize in physic was Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963.
Chemistry (biochemistry): Frances H. Arnold is one of the laureate. Ada E. Yonath was the last laureate for this reward in 2009.
No woman laureate for the Nobel Prize of Medecine this year.

Over the last decades (since 2000) 9 women earned a nobel prize either in chemistry, physic or medecine. More than 130 men got a nobel prize during the same period in the aforementioned fields.
In total less than 50 women got Nobel Prize, more than 800 for men...
In physics, this is the 3rd time a woman earns it.
In chemistry, only 6 women were rewarded.
Twelve in Medecine.

Progress are still needed/required in STEM since it remains quite sexist.

I am not a big fan of Nobel Prize except for the Nobel Prize of Peace but it is good mirror of some aspects of our society.

Hello!
I am going to tell you a secret but, please, do not repeat it to anyone 🤐 . No one, individually deserves a Nobel Prize, some big ego may think they do, forgetting all of the work that has been done before by many people (women and men). To those one I say "you deserve the Nobel Pride!" 😛

"I announced that I hate all men and wish all men were dead."

I'm sure we've all felt like this from time to time. Or several times a day if you're unfortunate enough to have male colleagues! Excellent, thoughtful article. We need more of this. Men being "supportive" is not enough. It's time to start calling men out for being complicit. They have to fix the evil in their gender for themselves. And until they do, they're all guilty.

This is a timely addition Jasmine, given the books for November / December all deal with the anger of women.

Perhaps you would like to start a whole thread on this topic as it may grow beyond what this thread on progress tries to expose? I.e. I think there is more to discuss than what an update thread can hold before the mods will intercede.

I usually get shouted down here as too radical or a "man hater" when I bring up the need for anger against all men and their universal guilt.

Ha. You got me there. I personally do not agree with what you are saying, but I can admire the enthusiasm and tenacity behind them if not respect that your opinions are formed on personal experiences.

I simply value order and organization. And in having this conversation (on your article, on complicity, etc) in a unique thread it may offer more people to join in the discussion than just those looking for progress updates.
