Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments I'm kind of overwhelmed by all the titles in different topics. I would like to know what you guys would recommend me to read, preferably just one or two titles a person ;-).

My favourite book: 1984.

I also read Lord of the Flies, which is very good as well. The hunger games were nice enough. I really liked the first book, but I hated the last one (and not because of love triangles or deaths or anything. This is not really the place to go in detail to why I didn't like it and I don't wanna give spoilers for those who haven't read it).

So, it's not a lot to go on, but I'm curious what you think I might like. I'm kinda open to anything, from popular YA dystopia to robots, as long as it's good.

thanks! :-)
Talitha

I would def. say The Handmaid's Tale.
Mockingbird has been recommended to me, I haven't read it yet, but it has some good reviews. One of my favourites is the Wool Omnibus, but I mention it so often that people will decide I am related to the author (I'm not).

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments Tnx!

Wool omnibus looks promising, I think I'll read them :-). Handmaid's tale is gonna go on my to read list, but it looks kind of heavy. Gonna need an real upbeat book to read after that one I guess.

I would like to know when you decide to read something how are you liking it (even if it is something different). I'm currently reading Jennifer Government, but for me it is more of a dystopian thriller.

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments I'm currently not reading a dystopia. I'm reading the fault in our stars by John Green. I'll let you know what I'm gonna read next:-)

Are you liking Jennifer Government so far?

Yes, I'm enjoying it. It is a very easy reading, but although it is set in a dystopia world, I'm not sure if I would put it in the same category as the Handmaid's tale or Wool.

I just saw someone reading The Giver, and thought I need to read it before the movie is out.

The Testament of Jessie Lamb is a good one. Brave New World is a classic.

You could try, 'Oryx and Crake' by Margaret Atwood and 'The Passion of New Eve,' by Angela Carter. They are both very well written and absorbing, but I have got to say 1984 is still my favourite.

I feel if people are going to read Atwood they should start with the Handmaid's Tale. But that is my opinion :)

Mine too ;)

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments So, I made a dystopia to-read list, and I've decided I'm gonna start with brave new world. I thought, since I have to start somewhere, a classic will do:-).

Classics are always a good start. In my mind the Handmaid tale is a classic, is it not? That is why I suggested it.

There are still classics I haven't read! :ashamed:

Have either of you ever read The Blind Assassin? Unlike the other books of hers listed on this thread it doesn't sound like it's dystopian, but I've read a ton of great critical reviews (which I tend to ignore in favor of reviews by people whose opinion I actually trust) and wanted to know if I would like it if I loved The Handmaid's Tale and Oryx and Crake.

Unfortunately I haven't read it, so I couldn't say.

Harvey (jamtheory) | 17 comments The Blind Assassin isn't a dystopian. I'm a big fan of Atwood but I didn't think it was all that great. It's all a bit obvious plot wise and the characters aren't anything special. It has some good lines in and it makes a good summer read (I took it on holiday a few years ago) but it isn't in the same league as The Handmaid's Tale, Oryx and Crake, Alias Grace (also not a dystopian) or The Penelopiad (also not dystopian).

Beau Johnston (beau_johnston) If you're willing to go out on a limb: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, I Am Legend, Space Marine, and Status: Deadzone.

Status: Deadzone is a collection of short stories that I really enjoy reading.

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments Tnx Beau! I hope there are audiobooks available, will definitely check them out :)
