C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments Ok. Categories have been messaged to Bookbuyer and shared with Alaina, Salha, and Jackie.

I am also going to try and come up with rules and such for a New Year's Resolution challenge for January. That one should be pretty easy, particularly since we've done one before.

Does anyone have any ideas for the first quarterly challenge in 2018? Or any other monthly challenges? I was thinking of revamping the Superhero challenge that we've done before, so we could use that at some point.

ooo Superhero challenge sounds like a lot of fun

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments I am going to keep working with that one. I thought it was pretty fun and goes well with all of the current movies/books that are coming out. Glad you like the idea!

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments @Alaina, I can't count your buddy read for Love Letters to the Dead because it's from another group :(

The Superhero Challenge sounds cool! It would be a great way to start the year :)

Does the quarterly challenge need to have a theme? Or just the categories?

message 406: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments It doesn't need to have a theme necessarily.

Maybe we will do Superheroes in February.

Omg I forgot to take that off!! Haha my bad.

HAha yeah, I think that was before I had my first sip of coffee. But I swear I was thinking that I forgot something the entire time and I had no idea what it was!!

I like them too!

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments Glad to hear it! I pretty much have the Superhero thing finished up to, so we can use that around February or so.

I can't remember if we came up with the quarterly challenge for next year (I've been so busy reading and watching football!!) but I was thinking maybe either doing like a new year new me or like a bucket list type challenge. Unless we have already done one of those.

But like for new year new me it would be everything new. Whether the book just came out that year, a new author to you, a new book to you, a new series to you, new genre to you, etc.

Or for bucket list, like books that have stuff that people have on their own bucket list, like: going to a different county (so read a book about traveling somewhere new or gaining a new experience), reconnect with an old friend (so read a book about people reconnecting) or something simple like so read so many books in a certain genre or on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

Just thought I'd share what just popped into my brain right now. Let me know what you think.

message 414: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments I like both of those! I think I was going to have us do a bucketlist challenge once and never did. I'm definitely down for adapting one of these. :)

message 418: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackiegirl02) | 4614 comments I know that we are counting pages read in October for points, but are we also counting them for a category? I thought we only counted pages, and only counted full books for categories completed.

message 419: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments As long as what they read is over the 100 page minimum then we will count them for this one.

message 420: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackiegirl02) | 4614 comments Gotcha. Just wanted to make sure since I know sometimes it varies. :)

Also, hope no one minds that I've updated team scores as well as quarterly challenge scores.

Are teams even, or will there possibly be a need for an extra?

message 421: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments I don't think they are even.

So I think I know why my status updates for Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaira have some on September 30th. That's because I started reading it midnight my time...which doesn't match with the GR time. So according to GR time I was reading on the 30th when I was actually reading on Oct 1st from the beautiful east coast of USA.

Jackie (jackiegirl02) | 4614 comments OK, I'll update the points later tonight

message 424: by Salha (new)

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments C.P. wrote: "I don't think they are even."

They're not even when it comes to number of members, but I think they are even when it comes to how much does each member reads. I don't know if that makes sense.

message 425: by Salha (new)

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments Jackie wrote: "OK, I'll update the points later tonight"

I checked the updates to the scores you did, and you're forgetting to add the 5 points per 1,000 pages read. I did the correction for Team Vampire already, and I'll correct the Seasons Challenge as well :)

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments Alaina, I'm just a bit curious... How do you read so faaaaast? You've already read 6 books during October!

It really amazes me. I'm a super slow reader haha

Uhh .. it's a secret ;)

Haha just kidding! It's kind of hard to explain..sometimes I'm just in the zone when I'm reading a really good book. I usually try to read 3-4 books a day.

Plus if there's an audio book or two it's pretty easy to go through books. I tend to pick up another book while i'm listening and read both.

message 430: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments The 5 points actually come into effect with the pages/200. So you shouldn't have to add in points on top of the formula.

message 431: by Salha (new)

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments C.P. wrote: "The 5 points actually come into effect with the pages/200. So you shouldn't have to add in points on top of the formula."

Wait... Then I've doing the calculations wrong? Could you please check the scores I've updated, C.P.?

message 432: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments I'll go and take a look when I get home. It should just be

points + buddy points + pages/200

The pages/200 is where the 5 points per 1000 pages comes in. It's what you end up doing if you create a proportion from the information.

message 433: by Salha (new)

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments So it should be like:

(pages+points per 1000 pages)/200 ?

message 434: by Salha (new)

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments What I've been doing is this:

points + buddy points + (pages/200) + points per 1,000 pages

message 435: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments If you do the divide by 200 you don't have to add in more points for pages, that is what dividing the pages by 200 does.

message 436: by Salha (last edited Oct 04, 2017 07:15AM) (new)

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments I don't understand :(

If dividing the pages by 200 adds those points automatically, then you're not really adding any extra points because everyone's points are calculated that way.

message 437: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments For example, if I read a book that is 600 pages long and was a buddy read, my calculation would look like this:

1 + 2 + 600/200 = 6

and I would get 6 points.

That said, as long as points are being calculated the same way for every team, it doesn't really matter. It's just giving ten points her 1000 pages instead of 5.

message 438: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments Right, they aren't bonus points, it's just how the pages calculate into points. If we leave off the fact that a certain number of pages counts for a certain number of points then we would only add the points and the buddy reads. This way those who read longer books kond of get "rewarded."

message 439: by Salha (new)

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments So, let's say that someone read two books, with 512 and 650 pages each, and buddy read them as well. The formula for total points would kinda look like this:

2 + 4 + (1,162/200) = 11.81

Instead of:

2 + 4 + (1,162/200) + 5 = 16.81

message 440: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments Yes, exactly. But if you've already been doing it the other way then stick with that for this month at least.

message 441: by Salha (new)

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments I’ve been doing it the other way, adding those extra points :(

I’m so sorry :(

message 442: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments No worries, Salha! Just stick with that for now. :)

That's great, Elizabeth! I don't set word count goals per day usually. I just try to write something each day.

message 443: by Salha (last edited Oct 04, 2017 08:02AM) (new)

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments Are you sure? I can go back and correct the scores. We are only 4 days in.

I've just realized that maybe the method I was using will cause a massive gap between each team's scores. For example, Alaina has already read +7,000 pages and that gives her 35 bonus points (5 per 1,000 pages)...

Like, there's a 50 point gap between her team and mine because of those extra points. Without those bonus points, the gap would only be of 20 points.

message 446: by Salha (new)

Salha (salhavam) | 557 comments I'll correct the scores. I think that's the fairest for all the teams, so as to avoid those massive gaps.

I apologise for this misunderstanding on the calculations!

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments No problem! I probably wasn't ever very clear about how it's done.

I apologize for being inactive these past two days.
My dad organized a surprise family trip for my mom’s birthday, and we’ll be back home on Monday. There is wifi, but the problem is that I don’t have my computer, so I can’t update the scores.
