Here's the place to talk about what you're working on, why it's taking you forever, and why a twelve book series now seems like a really stupid idea. lol :)

Yes, you will! :)

Kimberly Riley (kariley40) | 7 comments Current WIP is book 2 of the Keepers of Earth. I'm still on the first draft, but I'm 55,000 words in and I'm predicting this first draft to end off on 80k words. I have a LOT to go back and fill in.

I've skipped ahead a little and I'm working on part 1 of at least a 2 part final battle, in space. Yep, we're fighting aliens this time. Wee!

I often find it helpful to skip ahead and get the ending figured out before I flesh out the middle.

message 6: by Vania (new)

Vania Rheault | 3 comments Current WIP is kind of three: I'm working on a trilogy and all the books are in various stages. Book one needs a final read through after taking it apart twice, book two is in editing and book three is in its infancy--7,000 words in. :) I'll be happy to be done with them. Book one was a NaNoWriMo project that took a lot of time to fix.

NaNo is a great place to thrash out some messy stuff...it's less fun when you have to straighten that whole mess out lol

K.D. | 5 comments I'm writing another cozy mystery, but may take a break from it for a few days to work on another April Grace book. I forgot I have a contract on it, so yeah...gulp...I need to write that AG book. Soon. Title? Upside Down & Whopperjawed.

Unlike Gareth, God bless him, I don't usually skip around. That's because I have a one track-mind, and it doesn't make u-turns.

Often our books grow as our love for our characters grows. As you go along, you'll figure out how much you need/want to write. Go, you.

Yay to writing a full chapter. Work seems to interfere with many of our writing schedules. Boooo.

Time to get book two finished by the sound of it! :) And darker is good...I enjoy delving into the dark side from time to time.

Alex | 2 comments Right now, I am 30,000 words in on my second novel. However, this is AN entirely different genre that I'm used to writing but I know that the story and my writing is way better than the previous.

It is a police procedural drama

How much research are you doing for that one, Alex? Police procedurals are intimidating because of some of the details. I have written things with cops/sheriffs involved and it's taken a modest amount of research to get certain points right.

It's good that you feel your writing has improved. I'm sure you'll continue to see improvement as you head into your third book :)

Thanks Gareth! I'm hoping things dial down a bit so I can focus on more 'personal' stuff aka writing :)

message 25: by Trisha (new)

Trisha (meraanam) I'm working on a novel I first wrote many years ago (1999...eek), and then I rewrote it in 2012, changing the setting and everything. I've documented all that in my blog here:

https://twfwordstuff.blogspot.com.au/

After my 2012 rewrite, the novel sat...until 2017. Now I've worked through it and filled in gaps, and now I'm working on cutting words again. I have to cut about 25k of words. Noooo pressure. I always write too much and then have to cut back. Better than not having enough words, I guess.

Definitely better to have too many than not enough. Good luck slicing and dicing! :D

message 27: by Holly (new)

Holly (khaosfox) | 1 comments I'm working on two simultaneously at the moment. I have Seers Stone, which is book 1 in a new series set in the same world as my Ink Born books. That's a semi-new genre for me as it focuses on a treasure-hunting alchemist, so it's more action-adventure urban fantasy.

Then I have Ritual Ink which is Ink Born 4, that's darker and more intense that previous books in the series.

Both WIPs are set in the same world which makes life a bit easier, but the shift in tone between the two might break my brain lol.

I've also been planning out book 1 in another series set in the same world, because I can't help myself lol

message 28: by Trisha (new)

Trisha (meraanam) I know the feeling of being compelled to write more and more in a series. I did that with a contemporary drama / romance thing, which isn't the "done" thing. But I couldn't help myself either ;)

J C Steel (jcsteel) | 11 comments I'm currently editing the fourth in the Cortii series (sometimes even top-flight mercenaries have missions go completely sideways), and while that edit cools off I'm, well, uh, I'm editing a novel about a team of vampire hunters. Based on a yacht. In the Caribbean. Time will tell if that one gets published!

I would actually LOVE to read that team/vamps on a yacht in the Caribbean story :)

Roger Cave | 1 comments Hi

My WIP is far too high. I have books 14, 15, and 16 are all on the go.

I am trying to concentrate on book 14 at the moment, and I'm some 50000+ words in, but it's on hold. I'm studying at the moment so the writing isn't getting a look in. As for reading, it's all the technical stuff for the exam.

Must get that exam out of the way so I can concentrate on the writing.

You'll get there. Honest. I took 20 years to publish book 1. Go when you're ready - that's the only 'right time' to publish.

Thanks J.C. I know I will. It's just a very grueling process some days. I feel like I am swimming toward an island (the island being finishing the darn thing) and I can see it on the horizon getting closer with every stroke of my arms, but I still struggle some days with staying afloat and focused on my goal. It can be daunting to consider how much I still have to swim to get there, even though I've already swam three times the length to get to where I'm at now.

Take the time to learn writing and enjoying the process! Believe me, this is what I'd have done when I started rather than learning more later and finding I could so improve a pubbed book years down the line because I was now a better author

Lizella Prescott (lizellaprescott) | 1 comments Wow, I admire all of you who can actually produce a multi-book series! I have trouble maintaining that kind of sustained focus. Right now, I'm writing my WIP as a web serial to help me write on a predictable schedule and edit a bit as I go.

Yeah, you'll definitely make it. I'm working on stories that have been accumulating in my brain for twenty five years. I've self-pubbed twice and there's six years between books. Just keep chipping away. The best advice thing I ever heard was...

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. :)

Lizella, there's probably more multi-book stuff around because that's really what a lot of readers want. And as for sustained focus, I certainly don't have that. I just keep chipping away at it. :)

Lizella, it's not necessarily sustained focus. I have a series out, but it was one of those unique type of things that all but wrote itself. I wrote the first four books and a half books over the course of seven months, but then the inspiration stopped. The fifth book wasn't finished until five or six years later. In fact, I didn't really write between those times. I did go back and try to finish the book, but it didn't work. The books remained on my computer. I sent them to a friend and that was it. I didn't believe in myself as an author. Every so often, I wondered about doing something with them but left it at that, thoughts. So, the fact that I have a seven books available and an eighth getting ready, really blows my mind.

Keep plugging away. Each author is different. Find your niche. Best of luck.
