Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

From the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy, Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

Debra | 52 comments 100% Done. I loved this book! I am a Blake Crouch fan.

I don't really consider myself a big fan of science-fiction type books, but I'm a fan of Blake Crouch books. He has a way of writing that makes sense. I can picture the scenes he has created. I am drawn into his worlds. In this book, Jason Dessen is kidnapped at gun point, taken to an out of the way location and drugged. When he wakes up, he is told "Welcome Back" by a man who claims to be friends with him, and his wife and son are nowhere in sight. He soon learns that his son does not exist and his wife is not his wife. Thus begins the Dark Matter journey.

As I mentioned, Crouch is a gifted and intelligent writer who can take a subject such as physics/quantum physics and make it sound not only interesting but makes it almost understandable to us, the reader. That is a gift in and of itself. As I mentioned this is a science-fiction novel but it is also a love story. It's a story about physics, love, life choices, and coming home.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it fast and then wished that I hadn't. Isn't that the way of great books? I just have to keep turning the pages, I need to know more, I want to read more, it's past my bedtime but I don't care because I need to finish this book to see what happens. That is what I experienced when I read Pines (by Crouch) and when I read this book.

Lindsay | 5 comments I'm also not usually a sci fi fan but this one kept me interested the entire time.

MJ (vvitchykitty) I just finished it and it was so amazing. I did not think I was going to like this book, as I had never read this genre before, but I could not stop reading at all.

Bryndís chapter Eight & before
I'm reading this one in Dutch, so maybe I'll translate some terms here in a different way than in the book, but I hope you all understand =)

Still loving it! I really like crazy science! It reminds me a little bit of Fringe (TV series) without stealing their storylines, which is a good thing!
Being an (amateur) scientist, I actually understand the theories they talk about which is great! (view spoiler)

It's a good one, this one! <3

Nami (beforethedawn) | 1 comments Just finished it. I don't usually read sci-fi, but I must admit I really enjoyed it. I imagined it as a movie when I was reading it and it actually read like a script sometimes.
(view spoiler) It's a really quick read, pretty fast paced, but I would appreciate it more if the action would slow down a little from time to time. Overall I enjoyed it :)

(by the way - looking at your ratings makes me feel uncomfortable, only 4 or 5 stars. Am I too harsh? :P for me it's like a 3.5/5, not quite 4, don't hate me! I still enjoyed it!)

MJ (vvitchykitty) This book would be a wonderful movie, if done correctly. I think I am going to have to look into other books by Blake Crouch!

I only gave it a 2, largely because of the quality of the writing.

Catsbooksandcoffee Halfway through and I am trapped - will probably finish it today :-)
