Unfortunately, that's not it though it does seem like an interesting book, thanks for the recommendation.
I can't remember too much more about the novel, other than the fact that the protagonist is paid by individuals or companies to win these virtual reality battles.

Andy | 2124 comments Sounds a little like a short story by William Wu "On The Shadow Of A Phosphor Screen "

Or a book by Mack Reynolds The Earth War https://www.amazon.com/Earth-War-Pyra...

Tulane Simpson | 8 comments This kind of sounds like The Clone Codes to me.
This is the first book in a series by Patricia C. McKissack

The, I moved your request to the Suggest books for me folder because you're asking for books with a certain theme, not just one title.

The Fallen | 5 comments Unfortunately, none of the books recommended is the right one, however, at least now I have some recommendations to check out.
I was also wondering if you know of any books similar to daemon by Daniel soirez, I particularly enjoyed the virtual gaming aspect.

Grid Seekers perhaps. (I haven't read it, it was just suggested for me by an email book list.)

Keith | 224 comments Do you mean "virtual reality armies"?

message 13: by The (new)

The Fallen | 5 comments Yes, my text-to-speech software seems to be on the blink.

Peter Meilinger | 469 comments It's not virtual reality, but William Forstchen has a series called The Gamester Wars where people in the future pluck famous generals/warriors from the past to take place in battles or wars that are wagered on. The first book, The Alexandrian Ring, pits Alexander The Great against an alien general of similar skill and acclaim. The second book, The Assassin Gambit, involves the 47 Ronin. The third book, The Napoleon Wager, is all about Jack Benny, as one would expect.

Keith | 224 comments Also not virtual reality, but Time's Eye by Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter has places and people plucked from different parts of Earth's history. It culminates in the army of Alexander the Great (with a small number of 19th-century British soldiers) fighting the army of Genghis Khan outside Babylon.
