The caveat, however,, if you read this author, read it in order."
I'll second that, Skye. The way Connelly grows Bosch over the series makes it almost mandatory.

I'm currently reading HIDDEN PREY by John Sandford. Not too rough, solid writing that gets a reader into the story and holds him.

Some of my favourites in those genres are
The Straw Men, which starts as a great cop-chasing-murderer thriller and gets more intense. Probably the best serial killer novel I've ever read - and, yes, I an including Thomas Harris in that.
Every Dead Thing is just astonishing. In a similar vein to the Straw Men, cop and killer, very dark, very well written. It made Connolly the first non-American to win the CWA award.
Val McDermid is such a good writer, really any of her books. Perhaps The Distant Echo or A Place of Execution
Christopher Brookmyre is another superb Scottish crime writer - very dark and very, very funny. His books are in series but you can pretty much jump in anywhere.
