Unlike last August BOTM, this was not that close a race. Three books (The Collector, Passage to India, and Legend) all received more than 10 votes (preventing a second round of voting). The winning book won because the people who voted for it put their weight behind it and took advantage of participation votes whereas that wasn't the case for the runners up.

And the winners are:

1. Legend: Popular vote
2. The Roots of Heaven: Randomizer pick

Please note that The Roots of Heaven is hard to find if you want a print version. However you can download a free PDF here: https://archive.org/details/in.ernet....

If you are not able to download this, let me know and I can download and add to dropbox for people.

So even though it's a month from now, which book(s) do you think you will read in September?

From now one we'll be back to our regular voting schedule (voting once a month on or around the 15th of the month) but voting on books a month earlier so everyone can locate the books. So August 15 we'll be voting for October books, Sept 15 for November books, and so on.

Disappointed again not to have A Passage to India (voted for it when it came up for voting during the last 5 years...). I've already read The Roots of Heaven and several other books from Gary, so I'll skip that. So, in September, I will read Legend, one of the books up for the ninth Herculean labour, the remaining 26 chapters of the Three Kingdoms and, time permitting, I will get a head start in our fourth seasonal (Bleak House).

That's some rough luck. I voted for it this time too (although it's the first time I voted for it) and it was in second place but the Legend voters threw many more points toward securing its win.

On a more positive note, I just received confirmation that I should get the French version of Artamonov around August 21st, which will leave me enough time to read it by the end of the month.

Tracy (tstan) | 559 comments Irony! I found a copy of Roots of Heaven yesterday at a thrift store for 40 cents.
Once I'm done with it, I'll sell it to the first person willing to pay $5! Kidding aside, I'll read both.

Diane | 2044 comments Too cool that Roots of Heaven won the random vote. It was my true first choice for the popular vote, but I didn't vote for it because I didn't think anyone else would. That totally worked out. I will also read Legend, since I own the book.

Pip | 1822 comments Thanks, Jen, For Roots of Heaven. I can find Legend on Audible, where I have lots of credits, but I will only buy if I have read every other BOTM. LOTR is all the fantasy I can handle at the moment!

Sushicat | 292 comments I'll read Legend for sure. Not sure I'll have time for more with the race to the West Coast and Herkules.

Paula S (paula_s) | 220 comments I read Legend a couple of years ago, and might reread to join the discussion. I thought it was fantastic, but feel oddly reluctant to reread.
I also want to continue the road trip and tackle the seasonal read.

message 10: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 570 comments I read Legend years ago. I think I read about half a dozen of the series before I got too bored. They were easy to read page turners, which was exactly the type of entertainment I required at the time. I really can't remember anything about the plot though. If my local library can rustle up a copy from somewhere, I'll join in.

I've downloaded The Roots of Heaven. It's set in Chad, and that's good enough for me. (I'm trying to read every country in the world, and I prefer native authors, so I guess I should be reading Joseph Brahim Seid, or improve my French, but... I'll give The Roots of Heaven a go.)

In September, I will be furiously reading my way across the U.S. to get to California by September 30th. I will also be laboring in the Hercules challenging and listening my way through LOTR. It will be a busy month for me so no BOTM but hope to get back to them in October.

Glad the randomised pleased some of you :)

Just a heads up. I will be away from home August 14 through 18 so will not post October voting until either late Friday or early Saturday morning that week. But after that, I should be back on tract for "around the 15".

Connie D | 91 comments Thanks for the link to the pdf for Roots of Heaven.

I hope to read both, but I'll start with Legend.

But I may still be traveling across the U.S. My school year starts in late September, so I'll literally still be on the road...

We are looking for two moderators for the September BOTM discussions. You'll get 5 participation points for leading it and it's fairly easy and not time consuming. Dianne is doing a great job of moderating this month's The End of the Affair. Check it out if you want an idea of what it would entail.

Who wants to moderate either of these discussions?

First come, first serve. Easy way to get some extra participation points.

We still need a moderator for The Roots of Heaven

Would anyone like to take this on? It will earn you 5 points. The book is available for free on archive.org

Tracy has kindly offered to moderate Legend.
