Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Thanks Jenny. I sent a PM to Abir but haven't heard anything so hopefully she'll pop into this thread soon. So we need two new players. I'll head over to the appropriate thread.

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Great! I sent the PM so now we are just waiting for our next Itin and hopefully some hitchers!

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments We have our new itinerary on the spreadsheet:

spreadsheet link

For our first stop we can choose between

Spell it out - Madinah, Saudi Arabia (max 35 points_
Book from Saudi Arabia or written by Saudi Arabian writer (max 35 points_
Detour - Read a book that seems as though everyone has read it but you (max 50 points)

Which one does everyone like?

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments I don't mind the spell it out or detour for this one.

I have The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins which fits the bill for the detour.

message 705: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I can do either as well.

If we go with the detour, I'll probably use Dead as a Doornail (Sookie Stackhouse, #5) by Charlaine Harris

message 706: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments Either is fine for me too...

message 707: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Hello team, I saw your post in the Hitchhikers thread & was wondering if you were still looking?

message 708: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Dec 27, 2017 10:35PM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Hi Nicole, We'd love to have you on board. We're currently working on our first task of the First Class itinerary. We usually vote on what we pick, see above Message 703.

message 709: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Cool! I can do either, if we go with the detour I will go with All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
There are over 500,000 ratings so I hope this qualifies for that detour!

message 710: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I'm changing my book to The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #5) by Rick Riordan , over 500,000 ratings and I haven't read it!

message 711: by Josie (new)

Josie (josiemichele) | 96 comments I’ll read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak for the detour.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments So that's at least five for the detour..let's do it.

message 713: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Okay I updated our spreadsheet to record the information we have so far...

Team Planes, Trains and Really Big Books Spreadsheet

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Great. I'll start reading on the 1 January so it counts for some of my other challenges.

message 715: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I’ll be starting on Jan 1st also. Hopefully it can fit into another challenge!

message 716: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments That's my plan too!

message 717: by Tammie (last edited Dec 28, 2017 02:36PM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments I’m going to read The Notebook (The Notebook, #1) by Nicholas Sparks ...over 1M ratings...yep...I think this one qualifies...yeesh!

message 718: by Louise (new)

Louise | 385 comments Do you still need a hitchhiker, if so I'm up for joining :D

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Hello Louise!

Yes, we do. Welcome.

We are all so far doing the detour see message 703. Great if this fits in to your reading otherwise just read any book.

So I assume a few of us will be enemies in Cutthroat Island, evil yo ho ho!!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments So we are back to 7 players. Sweet.

I'll hold off on Abir's spot for a little while, hopefully she'll check in soon.

message 721: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Haha yes Lisa we are on different teams for Cutthroat :)
Don’t think there are many Aussies :(

message 722: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments No cutthroat antics allowed on our flight!!

message 723: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Just so we're all on the same page we can do up to 7 detours this trip. Here are the detours we have available to us:

Read a book that seems as though everyone has read it but you
Read a book with 10-20 chapters
Read a book that has the birthstone Ruby in the text or title
Read a book with a wheel on the cover
Read a book where the ISBN10 number has exactly 3 even numbers
Read a book where a character lives on a farm
Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the "top shelves" of the book) as school - plurals and minor spelling variations are acceptable
Read a book with more than 500, but less than 1000 goodreads reviews

I'm good with most of these, except maybe character who lives on a farm and "top shelves" of school. Do we want to make decisions now, or just wait until we're almost done with the one we're working on? I'm good either way, and if a lot of us are doing cutthroat it might make sense to wait to see what we have to do for that challenge (to see if it will work for this one).

message 724: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Has the number of detours increases because it’s first class? I thought we could only do a maximum of 5 per itinerary?

message 725: by Louise (new)

Louise | 385 comments I'm happy to detour, will probably read Murder on the Orient Express, like others here will prob hold off starting until 1/1 as I'm using the book for another challenge as well.

message 726: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Dec 28, 2017 04:46PM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Nicole wrote: "Has the number of detours increases because it’s first class? I thought we could only do a maximum of 5 per itinerary?"

Yes, that's right Nicole. Increased detours one of the privileges of First Class.

I can probably find something for most of the detours except the school one. But taking each one as we get up to it might work better as some team members might prefer the other options.

message 727: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Ok cool. I’d rather not decide until we get to it.
I was wondering since I’m new, when I finish a book, do I make a post about it?
Also if we are doing the spell it out option do we just nominate the letters we want to do? I assume most of the time we are reading a couple of books each?

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Here's the link to our Spreadsheet..

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

We usually post on here and you can also fill in your spot on the Spreadsheet.

If we do Spell it out yes, we nominate which letters we want to do and if it's a longer word quicker readers can fill in a couple of spots. It always seems to work out.

message 729: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Thanks for the help Lisa!
I look forward to getting started, not long to go now.

message 730: by Lexi (new)

Lexi I have a book for the current detour. Is Jan 1 the start date? I am currently reading the Way of Kings. It seems like everyone who reads fantasy has read it but me. Does that count?

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments We have got our First Class Itinerary now Lexi, so the book you're reading will count. A few of us are just holding off so we can use the same book in some other challenges starting Jan 1.

message 732: by Lexi (new)

Lexi Gotcha. I have too many 600+ page books on my too read list to do more challenges right now.

message 733: by Tammie (last edited Dec 29, 2017 08:29PM) (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments Finished The Notebook
11/29
★★★★

message 734: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Yes...has over 1M ratings...posted pick @717

message 736: by Bee (new)

Bee (abirbee) | 667 comments I just finished North of Beautiful , which by coincidence is a book that all my friends read but me. And has been on my to read list for a long time.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Great to have Abir back, so we now have a full team to finish the challenge.

Abir
Jenny
Josie
Lexi
Lisa
Louise
Nicole
Tammie

Jenny, would you mind PMing the Mods with the update. Thanks.

message 738: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Done!

message 739: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Just wondering how long a stop usually goes for? Roughly a week? Getting my reading challenges in order & want to make sure I don’t hold the team up!

message 740: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Nicole wrote: "Just wondering how long a stop usually goes for? Roughly a week? Getting my reading challenges in order & want to make sure I don’t hold the team up!"

Yes we usually try to stay at one stop for about a week, but are flexible if we need to stay longer we do.

message 741: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Cool, no worries, hopefully I can go buy my book today!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Finished Detour - Read a book that seems as though everyone has read it but you

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins -

Three star read - her second book Into the Water shows her growth as a writer, IMHO.

message 743: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I'll still be reading The Last Olympian for another challenge, but I am currently reading City of Bones and that has over 1.2 million ratings so I think I'll post that one when I'm done for this detour.

message 744: by Lexi (new)

Lexi I meant to finish my book last night but fell asleep with 30 pahes to go. I will wrap it up today!

message 745: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Finished detour - Read a book that seems as though everyone has read it but you

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare read 1/3, 5 stars

Now I see why over 1.2 million people rated this book!

message 746: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Jan 03, 2018 06:56PM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments That's a great series and world. After the deluge of paranormal YA that's the only series that I've continued reading.

message 747: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Yes I absolutely will continue with this series.

Do we want to start thinking about our next stop yet?

Spell it out - either Ornsk or Russia
Author/Story - from Russia
Detour - book with 10 to 20 chapters

I'm up for anything...

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments I'm thinking the detour should be pretty doable for this stop.

message 749: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4553 comments I’d like to detour again...

message 750: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Spell it out is only small & the detour will be easy as well. The only Russian author I know of is Tolstoy & I don’t fancy reading a behemoth book right now! Haha
