Dan Fesperman Hello to all, first as a reader and secondly as an author whose ninth novel (Unmanned), will be published by Knopf this August. I'd like to start by recommending a wonderful, powerful book from quite a few years ago, a title which tends to be forgotten, partly because the author died in the year of its publication (1998), and partly because it was the only novel he ever wrote. But if you enjoy mysteries/thrillers with beautiful and intelligent prose, evocative international settings, and moody atmospherics, then you can't go wrong with "In the Memory of the Forest," by Charles Powers, set in rural Poland in the early 1990s, when the country was just getting accustomed to life after the Iron Curtain. The only drawback is that, when you finish, you'll be all the more regretful that Powers didn't live to give us more. It's a real gem (published by Penguin, I believe, and still in print), largely overlooked, so give it a try.
