I found clay, but how do you understand this sentence: "A clay hair bun to the back of his head in gray and yellow, with five ostrich feathers on top." Does clay mean a color here or does the person have clay in his hair? It could be clay, there is also sentence: "Yellow clay lined his cheekbone and victory scars covered his chest and shoulder." I'm thinking the hair bun is made of clay but the colors are gray and yellow. The cheek is also yellow.

In this instance clay is a kind of dirt.

Not American Indian but African. Well actually not even that is very clear because the book is fantasy but there is tribes and the story has born from African mythology ^_^

No, because black is the color word. Pebble is what black is describing. If it had said "black as pebbles, that would have worked.
