What illness did Towle have?

It seemed like it could have been schizophrenia, but I'm not sure if my hunch on that is right. What did other people think?

I love the series! My husband buys me one a year. One year he bought me Jesse Kellerman book by mistake. It turned out to be Jonathan son. Writing runs in the family.
