If you already know what your favourite book was you read in August. Let us know below. Maybe tell us a little bit about why it was your favourite read.

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 1578 comments Not sure I will get anything else read, so I'm going to go with either The Crown Tower or The Rose and the Thorn (not sure I can narrow it down between those two).

And really, Royce Melborn is all you need to know about why these are amazing. He's absolutely fantastic. I might be a little in love with him.

I read a lot that I liked, but I think my favorite was the First Lord's Fury by Jim Butcher. I loved it as a great capstone to one of my newfound favorite series. I'm so glad I read past the first book. :)

First Lord's Fury (Codex Alera, #6) by Jim Butcher

message 4: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Ok this is gonna be long but the best book I read this month was definitely Dune since after some ranting from my dad who loved the book and film (he loves the old science fiction films) I had picked it up and I've never read anything like it and it was my first science fiction book and I loved it so much that I can't wait for the other books

I also watched the film which was decent but felt rushed and I didn't like the presentation of it (worst use of inner monologues I've seen) but apparently there gonna try again and make a new dune film so hopefully it will be made haha

For a BR I'll say Valour I know it was in September but I blazed through it quicker than I thought because it just got better with each page and it ended pretty well for me and the characters were awesome (can't wait for the other books)

message 5: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Damn BR's getting me distracted to read codex Aleta after getting halfway through the series I need to put a month aside for these books but it's great to see you enjoyed it Niki

Age of Swords was definitely the book of the month for me.

Also, how is that when I finally think I'm going to be the first one to set up this thread after failing in that department for the past several months, that you beat me by 15 minutes, Angela?! ;)
Clearly, I'm still dropping the ball.

Tammie | 5952 comments Nothing was super standout for me this month, but I did really enjoy reading The Black Lung Captain and also The Inquisition. They were pretty equal reads for me. I liked that they were both fun light reads.

Great minds think alike. You can set up the FBR what are you reading in September :-).

Once again my favourite was non fantasy. Cork O'Connor #8 Red Knife (Cork O'Connor, #8) by William Kent Krueger . The mystery and the characters continue to be very strong.

My favourite BR was Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay . I think part of the fun of this book for me was it was such a large BR with lots of contributions from the participants in the buddy read.

Ridiculously slow month for me. I'll pick Red Country by Joe Abercrombie

Tigana was a fun buddy read. I haven't even looked at all the comments yet - there are so many!

My top read this month was The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, #1) by Brandon Sanderson which was also a Buddy Read... I just loved everything about it... so much so that wanting to read Words of Radiance (The Stormlight Archive, #2) by Brandon Sanderson , but waiting, distracted me from paying attention and fully enjoying Nemesis Games (The Expanse, #5) by James S.A. Corey ... relistening to Magic Binds (Kate Daniels, #9) by Ilona Andrews (one of my favorite books of 2016) helped cleanse my reading palate, and refresh me on the book for the next release...

message 16: by Bill (new)

Bill | 2150 comments Top read was Kings of the Wyld which despite missing all the references I really had fun reading.

Damn I have three books I can't choose between and for the first time in 16 months not a single one is Malazan in the running. I know it's supposed to be only one but I need to maintain my street cred by breaking more rules so here's all three. :)

Bane and Shadow if book 3 is great this will crack my top ten all time series.

Swarm and Steel my #3 all time series.

The Obelisk Gate if book 3 is great this will crack the top ten and maybe the top 5 all time series.

That's a pretty frickin awesome month and trio. I've had months where nothing gets 5*'s and this is 3 of them.

Funny, one of the only books I've ever DNFed (I think I probably didn't finish a total of about 5 or 6 books in 30 years of reading.) and sometimes I wonder if I should try again... but after 500 pages I was still bored.

message 25: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35349 comments Mod
It might not be for you Olivia... there are some pretty epic payoffs in the last 100-200 pages of the book, but that's still 1000 pages you apparently weren't liking you have to get through first...

message 26: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Well I tried reading way of kings in a buddy but unfortunately some stuff got in the way of me reading it and I was ill and it put me off read way of kings since I couldn't concentrate properly on it so technically I DNF it BUT I need to find some time to pick it up maybe in a couple of months because I really want to read way of kings and see what the hell it is about

Also I'm hearing a lot about sandersons books being made into films and way of kings maybe pushed forward so yeah

message 27: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 1578 comments The Way of Kings is my favorite novel. I'm not sure that I really want Sanderson's books made into films though...I'm afraid they would disappoint me.

Someone bought the rights to turn the entire Cosmere into a film franchise like the MCU... Mistborn and Way of Kings are in production... I don't know how I feel about that... the Cosmere isn't going to be done until around 2040-2045 I don't think if you add up all the books/series that need to be written still...

That's the mark of a good book, when people take the time to reread it despite it being pretty long.

Of course, as Olivia demonstrates, not every book is to everyone's tastes and it's all good because variety is the spice of life. :-)

As much as I'd love to see Kaladin on the screen, part of me is also very wary. The casting of Kaladin would be make or break for me.

Have you all heard of this Kickstarter project to produce a Kaladin inspired soundtrack? I just found out about it but The 17th Shard website did a write up on it and it looks like it might have some good people working on it. It seems legit anyway based on the write up. They have samples of unfinished music tracks available.

Even though I made it through that was NotW for me. I just don't get the hype.

message 32: by Miche (new)

Miche | 3279 comments Iain, I am slowly reading them between other books. I don't want to run out of new Sanderson's books to read. :)

message 33: by Miche (new)

Miche | 3279 comments Scott, I started NotW twice and I lost interest both times. I still want to finish it one day, but that was a book that the hype killed for me.

Now I have very low expectations for that series, so maybe the third time will be the charm.

message 34: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (vinjii) | 1144 comments Scott, didn't get the NotW hype either, but I made it at least through book 1 and depending on what I hear of book 3, I might even try book 2.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments Y'all don't throw things at me, but I'm going to say it's a toss up between Age of War and The Disappearance of Winter's Daughter.

I'm happy to see many votes for previous books in both series', and that means you'll have good stuff to look forward to :)

message 37: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 1578 comments I'm so excited for both of those, Chris! Glad you enjoyed them so much.

Saul the Heir of Isauldur (krinnok) | 209 comments In August, I kind of just moved around, reading short stories. I read some of Howard's original Conan, and I found it to be quite amazing, and nothing at all like the film!

I'm currently reading The King of Elfland's Daughter by Lord Dunsany, and the language is amazing!

Luna. ✨ (lady_luna) | 234 comments I really liked The Darkness That Comes Before by Scott Bakker. Extremely challenging and confusing read that I thought I didn't enjoy, however I can't stop thinking about it since I finished.. & need to go back and change my rating. Literally have been thinking about it and why the things in it happened for an entire month. I think everyone who read it in this group hated it lol but I liked it

message 44: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 1578 comments Luna, I have decided not to read Way of Shadows. I was not a fan of the first two Lightbringer books and I hear they are much better, so I don't think his writing is for me.

message 45: by Seán (new)

Seán | 602 comments The Fifth Season - by a country mile. I may have finished the series by tomorrow and I have a feeling I'm going to regard the third as my favourite, but TFS has to be one of the best first books in a trilogy ever. It draws you in and has you begging for answers.

message 46: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 653 comments Not a great reading month for me: one 2*, three 3*, and one 4*. Ready Player One was the 4* read, so I guess by default it wins.

I read Way of Shadows this month too. I enjoyed it somewhat, but thought the writing was pretty bad. I really only liked it because it's the sort of story that sucks me in no matter how many times a new author recycles the same old tropes. I gave it 3* based on the Goodreads scale, but can completely see why someone would rate it lower. I'm 20 chapters into Shadow's Edge and am finding it rather dull and boring. Just not sure why people love Brent Weeks so much. Maybe the trilogy will end really well?
