message 12: by Chris (new)

Chris (murphy44) | 710 comments I'm going to be flying solo this month (I Think!) unless Laura wants to tackle Sojourn with me.

But my goals are to finish Fool Moon, Stone of Farewell, and The Last Colony.

And if I start a new book, is going to be one of the following:
Sojourn
Empire of Night
The Liar's Key
Eldest
The Well of Ascension

...as I want to work on finishing some series rather than start new ones!

Saul the Heir of Isauldur (krinnok) | 209 comments I just finished Memory, Sorrow and Thorn this summer, and I really loved it! The length is a little wearying, but it's worth the time.

Fool Moon is perhaps in my Top 5 Dresden books, so good choice!

Thanks Saul! I'd actually never heard of Williams before joining this group in the spring, we did a buddy read of it in June, and he was an instant hit with me. I think he's battling Sanderson as my top guy just because it's hard too pick one. Different styles but both enjoyable! And Dresden is a cool & light series, the wife and I are enjoying them.

(Looking at stone of farewell on my shelf as it gives me the puppy eyes begging to be read "not long now just wait for a moment")

My feelings to the book right now can't wait to see your review as well as getting to the book also

Also hope you like Well of Ascension it definitely gets better after the Final Empire and the ending still haunts me...at least I think it did

I've got The Great Hunt booked in - aside from that I'm not really sure, I'll just go where the mood takes me.

message 25: by Andrew (last edited Aug 30, 2017 08:35AM) (new)

Andrew | 653 comments I will for sure read these three books:
Shadow's Edge (in progress)
The Great Hunt (FBR)
Lord of Emperors (FBR)

After that, I will most likely either read the final book in The Night Angel Trilogy to wrap the series up, or will pick a random Discworld book to continue my slow-but-steady progress through Pratchett's world of whimsy.

I don't expect to start a new series, but if I do it will likely be one that I considered last month: either Drenai Saga, Powder Mage, or Riyria.

Saul the Heir of Isauldur (krinnok) | 209 comments I'm doing a BR for Sailing to Sarantium, and maybe its sequel. Probably finish up The King of Elfland's Daughter, with which I'm halfway done.

message 28: by Vuk (new)

Vuk (wolfient) | 44 comments I'll be finishing Romeo and Juliet, The Novice and starting A Game of Thrones.

message 30: by Drew (new)

Drew (hurricanedaddy) | 35 comments Plans change, but
1. GRRM Fevre Dream
2. Abercrombie Sharp Edges
3. Finish a book from my unfinished section, probably Grave Peril from the Dresden Files
4. Dan Abnett Gaunt's Ghosts: The Founding
5. I really want to squeeze a history book in here.. I've been wanting to read one of the WWII books by Walter Lord, but the chances of that happening before next month are slim and none, and slim left town... Gaunt's Ghosts is massive, so it could me 3 weeks if life gets busy. Cheers!

I really want to start catching up on that Incomplete challenge now that I set it up... September isn't a good month for that tho... September, January, and March are my heavy new release months... 5 new books each... the rest of the year tends to be lighter...

message 39: by Martin (new)

Martin Apergis I have started reading Dune maybe not the best one to try and get into a reading habit again after being away from it for years?

message 40: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 653 comments Martin wrote: "I have started reading Dune maybe not the best one to try and get into a reading habit again after being away from it for years?"

Yeah...probably not. I've got a few ideas for you though. I see you've got some Christian theology/apologetics on your read shelf. have you tried anything by A.W. Tozer? The Pursuit of God is one of my favorite books.

If Dune isn't your cup of tea but you still want to read old school sci-fi, then maybe try A Princess of Mars. It's a super easy read and tons of fun.

Given that you're posting in a forum for fantasy fans, I'd recommend Mistborn as fast-paced read that would be a good re-entry into making reading a habit.

message 41: by Martin (new)

Martin Apergis I actually do own the first book from the Mistborn sereis. you recommend that over Dune then. I only started Dune because I mean to listen to the audio book when I'm driving alongside reading at home. I thought that way I may make better progress.

I personally liked Mistborn better, but the main reason I recommend it over Dune for you is that you said you were just getting back into reading and realized Dune may not be the best place to start. It's a good book, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is just starting back into reading for pleasure. There are definitely other good books within the SFF genre that are easier for someone to get into. Completing it partially on audiobook may make it easier, though.

I second that opinion!! Mistborn is amazing! Try it out before Dune, it'll refresh your love for the genre.

I'm in a little reading slump myself right now...I don't feel motivated to finish Fool Moon or Stone of Farewell while looking at other titles on my shelves...But I'm gonna push on and let you know my final review.

message 45: by Martin (last edited Sep 11, 2017 11:18AM) (new)

Martin Apergis ok so I am going to leave Dune for another time and start a new book today. I have been out of reading for a while so want a good story and fairly easy read to ease my self into the habbit agin. I have 3 books on the table: Sanderson's" Mistborn" series the 1st book, Rothfuss's " The name of the wind" and Tad Williams " Memory sorrow and thorn" series book 1.
which one should I go for?

message 46: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 1578 comments I would definitely say Mistborn. I'm not a fan of The Name of the Wind myself and don't think it moves as well. I haven't read your other option yet, but it's a big book and I hear it's a slow burn.

message 47: by Niki Hawkes, I made it past GOTM... barely (new)

Niki Hawkes - The Obsessive Bookseller | 7639 comments Mod
Granted I haven't read Williams yet, but between the other two I loved Name of the Wind slightly more (although it galls me to say that since I'm angry at his apparent lack of interest in producing the final book).

message 48: by Liam (new)

Liam (leeman729) | 828 comments I would read Mistborn =]. I'm hesitant to recommend Name of the Wind, because even though I really liked it, book three is so far away that it's not even worth starting until we know he'll actually finish it haha.

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Martin wrote: "ok so I am going to leave Dune for another time and start a new book today. I have been out of reading for a while so want a good story and fairly easy read to ease my self into the habbit agin. I ..."

So I've read these books but I haven't finished the series yet so here is my input

Name of the wind felt overhyped in my opinion so if you want to read it go in with low expectations because it's good but not as brilliant as I thought it would be and probably not something I would recommend yet

Mistborn is pretty fun there's a lot of cool stuff in it the magic is great and I would say this is the easiest book to read out of the three you listed since it's fairly simple and it's very gripping and something you should definitely read

I LOVED the dragonbone chair because it feels more like a classical fantasy story like Jordan and Tolkien and yes it's a slow burn because of the details and the world itself is interesting as well as the history and I still need to read the other books but I would recommend this to anyone who wants to read some old school fantasy but you have to be patient with this book so only go for this one if your committed to it really

I hope that helps but to summarise I would personally recommend mistborn or memory sorrow and thorn with mistborn being the easiest to read but I would love to see you try Dragonbone chair haha

message 50: by Martin (new)

Martin Apergis thanks guys s much for the input. I will definitely start MISTBORN but decided to get Elantris to see how I feel about Sanderson.
I really look forward to diving into the Tad Williams books though they are big but I her good things.
