Vesmé (vesme) | 25 comments Book was a chaptered children's book. The cover may have been pale yellow with maroon font, and softcover.

I read this book in the early 90's, though the setting was older so the book itself may be older. Because the book starts with the children traveling separate from their parents to meet up at a residence in the countryside, I tend to think it might be set during World War II, but maybe I'm confusing it with The Chronicles of Narnia.

The siblings are 2 boys and 1 girl. I know the youngest sibling is a boy.

At one point the girl makes a meal, maybe pasta, that doesn't turn out well. I seem to recall the brothers complaining and the sister being annoyed about it.

I think after it stops snowing, but they're still cut off, that they discover food supplies that had been stored in a barn/tool shed building for their visit.

Vesmé, are the children travelling alone by train/bus/etc.?

Are they stranded in the snowstorm at the countryside residence and are totally alone with no neighbors nearby?

How well do the children get along? What's the tone - funny, somber, tense, adventurous, etc.?

Vesmé (vesme) | 25 comments I don't remember how they travelled. While I'm sure it was mentioned in the book, the story was focused more on them being stranded. They may have been dropped off at the location by cart and buggy, but maybe I'm confusing that with something else, like The Secret Garden.

They are stranded at the countryside residence totally alone. There are no neighbours in sight, but I don't think they know the area either. This was there first time to that location. I think they were maybe staying there temporarily for Christmas vacation?

The children get along... well, like siblings. I don't recall them fighting all the time, but I don't think they were friends, either.

The tone was serious. It was a big deal that they were stranded because of the snow. Things like them making their own meals and finding the food seemed like accomplishments for them.

Phantom of Walkaway Hill by Fenton
The Snowstorm by Netherclift
Trapped! by Northrup
No Time for Rabbits by McFann

Vesmé (vesme) | 25 comments Thank you for the suggestions, Kelly, but unfortunately none of them are the book I'm looking for.

Sarah Holland | 134 comments Was there an avalanche? Is it dark? If so, it may possibly be Landslide!.

message 7: by Vesmé (new)

Vesmé (vesme) | 25 comments There was no avalanche and it was only dark at night. There may have been no electricity because of the snow?

Thank you for the suggestion, though.

Shanna_redwind | 852 comments Did they try to kill wolves with pills crushed up in meat? I'm wondering if I'm looking for the same book in another thread. The book I read was from the 80's or earlier I think and set further back than that I believe.

Vesmé (vesme) | 25 comments Teri-K- That's not it, but thank you for your response!

Shanna_redwind- That doesn't sound familiar, and it feels out of place for the book I'm looking for. Hope you find the book!

Vesmé (vesme) | 25 comments Thank you for the suggestion Lauren, but that's not it.

Ayshe | 4720 comments It's not exact match, but just in case: Castaway Christmas?

message 15: by Vesmé (new)

Vesmé (vesme) | 25 comments So, after reading the goodreads reviews I was thinking that Castaway Christmas might be it. Sure, I don't remember flooding, but the rest seemed to fit. That said, I found an old, longer review online and became a little less sure.

I checked the authour's other works and she has another one with the same characters called Cut off from Crumpets which has some similar elements, but there is very little about the plot that I can find online.

I do think it's possible that one of these books is the one I'm looking for.

I've checked and my local library doesn't carry them, and to be honest buying and shipping them is a bit too pricey for me.

I'll keep looking for copies, but I'm gonna let a mod know that this is probably solved.

A huge thank you to Ayshe, and anyone who offered suggestions! <3

Ayshe | 4720 comments I can find only this for Cut off from Crumpets:
The Ridleys, on a belated Christmas holiday in Somerset, view the long winter of 1962/63 from the cottage where, with Aunt Borage out of action, they are left to contend with frozen pipes. hungry animals and dwindling supplies. It is enterprising Pinks who discovers the remote house where Owen and Lettice are in an even worse plight. Accident and the clash of character together make a story vigorous. realistic, and as good as anything from this author.
Growing Point - Volumes 3–4, 1964

Maybe you can try inter-library loan?

I was going to suggest the Interlibrary Loan also. And did you maybe try http://www.gutenberg.org/ ? Some books are in that already that were published not that long ago, relatively speaking (by which I mean 40's, 50's and 60's). And since the books you think might be yours look, by what I've seen here in this post, like they might have been written in that time period.

message 18: by Vesmé (new)

Vesmé (vesme) | 25 comments It's not up on Gutenberg, thank you for the suggestion, though.

I'll check in at the library to see if they can get it in!

Vesmé emailed me that this is probably solved. I will put this in the Possibly Solved folder, and perhaps we'll hear back from her that it is definitely the book.

I also endorse the Interlibrary Loan. I've used it at my library and it is wonderful.

message 20: by Teri-K (new)

Teri-K | 305 comments Openlibrary.org is another place to try and read obscure books. It's hit or miss but I've found a number of titles I was looking for there.

message 21: by Vesmé (new)

Vesmé (vesme) | 25 comments Didn't find it on Openlibrary.org, thank you though.

I did put in a request for an interlibrary loan, though they told me it would be a bit of a wait. I'll be sure to post when I received and read them!
