Horror Aficionados discussion

I am new to Net Galley. They keep sending me emails saying that the companies no longer have the copies I requested. Yet, when I check back for more titles, The site says they are still available. When I try to request it again, a note shows up that says, " You have already been declined ". This is in the horror section. Does anyone have an idea of what is going on? It is frustrating when I see YouTubers who are like, "Look! I got this arc and this arc and this arc from Net Galley." I can't even get one but they are getting multiple. Anyone know what gives?

Just keep requesting. Once you get a few under your belt it will be easier to get more. Definitely keeping to above 80% reviewership helps. Some publishers, like Harlequin, are almost impossible to get anything from. Bloggers and Vloggers, successful ones, get the most stuff.

The ones that have been getting the arcs that I have seen on YT have 100 or less subscribers. This is why I'm confused. I will keep trying but dang, one of them sounded so awesome, I really wanted it lol.

I think Lena is right. Be sure that you list in your profile all the places you review books. They want to get the word out and will most likely grant ARCS to those who they believe can best do that.

Other than that, all you can do is be sure to review the ones you do get, as well as anything else you fancy, to get the number of your reviews up. The more people chat on your reviews, or add books based on your reviews, the more likely you will be to get approved.

All that said, I just had someone get an ARC of a book I requested 108 days ago and never received a response. *shrugs* All you can do is keep plugging on. There's always good books out there to read.

Thank you and I get it. However, two people who have gotten several ARCs do not meet the requirements you talked about. This perplexes me. ButI thank you for your advice and will keep trying. :) I just joined HA and have to say I really appreciate how people help out here.

I don't know if there is an exact science to it. I thought I had a solid foundation with my reviews on my blog, Booklikes, Goodreads, Amazon, posts on Facebook and Twitter, but I still got shut out from the ones I wanted more often than not. It took me reading ones that I was only kind of interested in and building my reviews on NetGalley to finally get them to open up. Once I reached that point, it was like the floodgates opened. Now, I rarely get turned down, but it took me a year or two to get there.

Some publishers have requirements for receiving ARCs of their books. Such as a blog with a certain number of followers and hits. You need to check the publishers requirements before you select that you want a copy of a book.

Also if you have too many books to be read and not reviewed yet and you are below 80% in your ratio of books outstanding to books completed you will have a harder time being approved.

Check you're spam folder if you never received an accept or decline email.

Guess what? I just got approved! Woohoo. I opened the email expecting another rejection but was pleasantly surprised.

lol, good luck! Harlequin, believe it or not, are notoriously picky. Just don't do what most of us do and request too many and then have a bad case of the regrets. Not that I'd know anything about that . . .

I told myself I was on a netgalley ban but I just had to request that once I looked it up! I just searched it in find titles to avoid requesting 20 more books lol.

Which admittedly, IS better than wanting to BUY ALL the books, but is still hard to deal with. ;)

I think I too am a jellyfish. I got approved for subhuman...and now i'm looking at all the stuff I have to get to and when i'm hoping to get to it and just...kinda panicking. Lol

You may want to try getting books that are available now so you will definitely get them, in order to help build up your reviews and ratio count.

So far, I have been given three. Now I am worried it will take me too long to review them lol. I hope they don't deduct points if I don't have reviews up in 48 hours. So far Rachel all three of them are really good and I'm happy to have them. Thank you for your advice! :)

I read ebooks and enjoy them but I prefer hard copies. Nothing is like holding a book and turning pages.

I am a big procrastinator. I go by the date the book is supposed to be published and just post before that date. I have had books in my account longer than three months because the publishndate was so far out. As long as your ratio is above 80% you are fine.

I love hard copies too :) I spend long hours all day on a computer at work, so reading on another small screen bothers my eyes. I had bought a cheap tablet so I could read ebooks on, and I barely use it lol!

Turned in another review and requested two Harlequins: one without a cover, one without a cover or a description. Let's see if that ups my odds.

I actually cut back on getting NetGalley books. I found that I was stockpiling a bunch of books that were only mildly intriguing to me, and then felt forced to read them to keep my percentages up. What it really did was keep me from reading the ones that I currently have and would rather be reading.

I"ve gotten much more selective about what I request also, Ken - my own TBR is over 100!

The TBR is definitely out of hand but I have a burr about Harlequin, I want a yes from them - at least once!

They were my first denial. They have always denied. Getting something from them is the proverbial water from a stone. But I will chip away at them!
