Remember when you said you wanted another read-a-thon? Well, it's time! Yes, that's right - it's read-a-thon time! If you're sad to see summer come to a close, drown your sorrows in some good books. The Around the Year in 52 Books second group read-a-thon is just around the corner.

How does this work?
If you’re new to read-a-thons, don't worry! They're very simple. You make a commitment to read as much as you can for a set period of time and then you do it. There are often games, challenges, and discussion associated with the event but, for the most part, it's about reading and camaraderie. This read-a-thon there will also be a group challenge, so get ready for that sign-up!

For our read-a-thon, we'll be committing to read as much as we can for one week. The week long format gives more members more opportunities to participate! If you're lagging behind on your goal and looking for an excuse to play catch up, this is it!

How much do I have to read?
There isn’t a set amount you are required to read to participate. Many people choose to set personal goals for themselves but the idea is just to read as much as you can for the week and see what you end up with at the end. It’s all in good fun!

When is this happening?
START:
Sunday, September 17 @ 12:00 PM (EST)

END:
Sunday, September 24 @ 11:59 AM (EST)

If you don't live in EST, you can find your start time here.

Note: The kick-off time has changed to noon instead of midnight. If you want to start at a time convenient for you then that's perfectly fine. Just keep in mind that many of the activities will follow this schedule.

How do I participate?
All you have to do to join up is to read! But read-a-thons are always much more fun if you participate in the games, join the discussion, and track your progress so we strongly encourage everyone to take part in that.

Where do I participate?
Keep on eye on this folder during the Read-a-Thon for updates, progress reports, and more! They'll start being posted closer to (and after) the event starts.

As usual, we'll be posting new games every 24 hours throughout the week in this folder but you'll have all week to join in if you missed anything. The discussions and games keep the event active and lively so, again, we strongly encourage participation. Come play along and have some fun!

Samantha | 1572 comments Awesome! I have several books that I want to read but I am just not getting around to reading these days. I think a read-a-thon is just what I need to get me out of this slump.

Thank you mods for putting this together!

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Thank you mods for organising this. I really enjoyed the last readathon and I'm looking forward to this too.

I've read a series of not-that-great books recently and I've been feeling a bit unmotivated as a consequence. Hopefully this will help bring back my reading enthusiasm!

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) Will there be more than one way for individuals to join in the games and whatnot or will this be mostly group focused activities?

Amy, we'll have the typical book tags/games that you can just post your answer. That's what is posted every 24 hours. Then there will be an individual game that runs all week and the group Bingo. So definitely different types of activities.

Ok, thank you. Just want to be able to join in somehow even if it's on my own.

Aline (thousanduniverses) | 201 comments I'm definitely going to join in. I love Read-a-thons and they're so much fun here in this group :)

Libby Gregory | 3 comments I would love to join, is there a sing up page or no, do I just join this gourp

If you want to participate in the team challenge then you should do so here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

But if you're just reading and doing the individual games then you just join in :)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments Is Bingo just for the groups or are the individuals allowed to participate in that as well? I've had to miss the last couple of RATs and things have changed a bit (change is good :] ).

Anyone is welcome to follow along with the team Bingo and attempt to complete it individually. The tasks are created with a team in mind so many would likely be difficult to complete by a single person. Manda, I know you complete a lot of books so it may be a little more possible for you :)

We'll have one game that continues throughout the week but it's a little less focused on reading. If there's interest, I would be willing to put together an individual Bingo card.

J Austill | 1118 comments Ya'll should just make Manda one of the teams, and see if she doesn't win. ;P

Haha. She probably would get it finished before any of the teams do.

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments hahahahaha *blushes*

Challenge accepted?! Now that I'm getting some of my free time back, I'm feeling ambitious.

Laura, I would totally be down for individual bingo, but I may just be solo here. If other people are interested in this, I can help if you need/want it :)

I do like the team aspect idea. My work-life balance has been so unpredictable this year that I would really hate to commit to a team and flake on them if something came up. At least if I am going solo, I'm only letting myself down.

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments I've never participated in a read-a-thon before, so this is exciting! I just read through the posts from read-a-thon #1 to get an idea of what goes on and it looks like fun. It gave me an idea for a possible game - I played this at a party and some of the answers were really great! Here it is:

The moderator asks a question, and everyone must answer it with a line from whatever book they are currently reading (we had a time limit -- like 2 min or something -- that we could spend looking). Not all questions fit all books, which is what makes the game fun. For example, questions/prompts could be:

1. What's a line from your diary?
2. Describe the man who sat next to you on public transportation.
3. A song you'd sing to a crying baby.
4. A political slogan.

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Thanks Cheri for the game suggestion! Spoiler alert, we'll add it to the games for next week's read-a-thon! ;)
