Ch 8 (22%) - (view spoiler)[ OK, I wish someone would explain what the "Chosen" one is. I am assuming it means that someone foretold a girl would have all four bloodlines or something? Obviously, Nona keeps holding back her abilities in order to make friends. Will we get to see her in action soon - perhaps when the spoiled brat Arabella tries to harm her again? Also, are we 100% sure that Saida is dead? Feet sticking out from a sheet does not equal a full body with a face. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 40: (view spoiler)[ Wait now they think its Xohl? (sp? I'm on audio) Why can't it be Nona? I don't understand why they think all these other girls can be "the one" but not Nona. Is this going to end up being one of those things like in Harry Potter where a prophecy is said that have multiple people that can fulfill it? (hide spoiler)]

Finished: (view spoiler)[ I both can and also can't believe that Clara betrayed us all in the end. I'm just going to go ahead and say I am not a fan of how this book skips around time wise. Other than that I'm really interested in the story line. Needing the ship hearts etc.. its almost like there is this little hint of scyfi in there that is just hanging on the edge. I still don't understand really why Nona cant be considered "the one" and why they think it might be Xohl (sp?) but I'm willing to move on to the next book to see what happens. When they weren't skipping around it was actually pretty good. Especially when they were greasing Yisch (sp?) up and stuffing her into a barrel lol. I wonder if in the next book we will find out that Nona has all 4 gifts. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 20 - (view spoiler)[ Well that was exciting! But I'm not sure I understand why Nona doesn't trust the Abbess after that. I also thought Nona would end up being the Chosen, not just a shield.....but I guess if the prophecy was just a lie anyway, it doesn't matter. I also thought that Marcus would be there with the priest, but perhaps their reunion will be later. (hide spoiler)]

I am starting to get into the story more, but I feel like every time I spend a couple of hours reading and my little % read only goes up by like 7%, I get a little frustrated. So, I guess I'm saying that I'm going through this slower than I anticipated. I wish I had it on audio!!

Got a little farther along, hope to update my comments shortly.

Ch 26 - (view spoiler)[ What the hell? Are they going to let everyone come and beat the hell out of Nona? And that crap about “well I’d she is truest the shield, she will have to fight bruised and broken all the time”. My only hope is that this Zole will get what is coming to her either from Darla or all the girls will hang up on her. (hide spoiler)]

Finished - (view spoiler)[ Ok, I admit I'm a little confused by the ending. Not the part where Clera continued to betray them, I think we were being set up to see that all along. But the part where Nona looks off into the distance at the Tacsis troops and thinks that whatever she is about to reveal will change Clera's allegiance to them. I'm also wondering what made her so cold-hearted in the time from killing Raymel to whatever time that was at the end. She just looked down at Ara's skewered body and was like "I hope she survives". I hope she does too! I like Ara. As for Zole - I really don't get her character, nor her importance. Other than Sister Whatshername saying she was the Chosen One, she never really did anything that impressive other than show off some fighting skills that the younger girls hadn't learned yet. I was also under the impression that the Chosen One didn't mean squat anymore now that Yisch and Hessa's ordeal revealed that it wasn't one girl with all four powers that would do something, but rather bringing together four hearts to one place. Poor Hessa, I'll miss her. (hide spoiler)]

I'd be willing to read the next one. Maybe the second week of December? Really anytime is fine.

Just starting :)

First quarter - (view spoiler)[This is a reread for me but I loved the beginning just as much as during my first reading. It is also fulfilling the Nevernight-shaped hole in my life, as there are many similarities in the bloody academy and the young age of the girls who are trained there.

Nona Grey is saved from hanging by Abbess Glass, who strangely reminds me of Professor McGonagall, so I'm getting my HP fix in as well, lol!

I really enjoyed learning of Nona's younger years with Saida. It made her death all the more poignant, even though we never really get to know her character. I loved learning the of the academy training, following this, even more! (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[The sister of poisons is brutal! I love how far ahead she thought, to get both Nona and Arabella with her poisons, eventually.

The arrest of Abbess Glass and Nona came as such a shock. I felt the reader went through a wild ride of seeing them incarcerated, close to freedom, the decision overruled, the discovery of Nona as the shield, and the candle and shield testing to prove it. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[Both the path and the talk of threads were so interesting to learn about. Zole's arrival was equally as intriguing, especially as it prompted a fight between Nona and her, and both Ara to walk the path in defence of Nona and Nona to walk the path to escape the pain of whipping. (hide spoiler)]

Are you reading with the audio? I'm thinking of going with that route, but I wonder how the narration is.

The author's note at the beginning scared me, lol!
I've only tried one of his books before, Prince of Fools and didn't enjoy it all that much. I hope this one goes better!
I'm through 10 chapters (27%) and I'm liking it quite a bit. (view spoiler)[ I love books with training academies! The trope never gets old for me. I just don't know if I really like Nona yet. She's a hard one and I'm not sure I know how she's feeling as she's going though all this. (hide spoiler)]

Dannii, I'm trying to picture Nona in my head, but I don't think I learned her age. I think I missed it. Do you know her age?

I skipped the notes, they are overwhelming! Lol. I didn't find it impacted my reading though.

I believe she is 8 when the books start?

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[Ugh! That ending! Clara's betrayal was a hard lesson to learn, but I'm glad we got to see more Hessa and Ara because of it.

I really enjoyed how the epilogue begun exactly how the first chapter did. It brought the story in a nice circle and got me so excited for Grey Sister.

This was a reread for me and reading my original review I noted that I had so many unexplained questions about the path/magic. This still rung true but impacted my enjoyment less so I think the book has gone up to a 4.5/5 from a 4/5 star read for me. 4.75 if we are getting super technical. Lol! (hide spoiler)]

Ok, thank you for the confirmation on her age. That's so young, omg!
And the notes were definitely overwhelming! And they don't work in the beginning of the book! I don't know any of these names or terms yet, how can the author expect me to understand anything, lol.
