UK Book Club discussion

No probs!

Hello Zoe, Hello Blighty! You've probably all gone to bed now, or are just about to, but I got pulled in here and I can't get out. (Next stop, "most challenging read" thread). Anyway, I'm new here, coming to you from New England, and I was drawn to your group for its UK-centeredness, if that's a word. I am curious about what you all think might be the most English of English books, if you follow. I mean ones that really capture something echt English, as in, "of or pertaining to England" - books that couldn't have been written anyplace else. There are lots of obvious ones, (like Jeeves & Wooster or Remains of the Day) and those are great but I'd like to hear about as semi-forgetten classics (Siegfried Sasoon's Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man leaps to mind, for instance;). I want to read those books.

Anything by Jane Austin obviously

More recently other authors to look for Bernard Cornwell or Ken Follett are both very 'english'....

You could take a look at some of the books people are reading for the UK counties challenge too. Although this is a UK book group it's not because we only read books from the UK, far from it in fact. It's mainly because most of us are from the UK.

Oh, someone else to look for, not English but Irish is Maeve Binchy. I'm sure others will have suggestions but they are a few that spring to mind :-)

I'm familiar with all of those but Cornwell - I'm a fan of the Brontes and of Binchy (different as they are). Thanks for the suggestions.

I know this isn't quite the same category, but how about Last Light? Although it is apocalyptic, I feel the subject is dealt with in a very English way, a la The Day of the Triffids or The Death of Grass. Something a little different to Thomas Hardyet al!

Has anyone put a Euro challenge together? Like books from every country in Europe or something?

Well, we're currently going around the world, so all the European countries would be included in that.

Hi Zoe - I've been following along for some weeks now but I am not quite sure of the board rules for author's who want to announce a promotion. I have one coming up next weekend and I was hoping to post about it on the board but I don't want to put it in the wrong place and irritate anyone. Any guidane. Anyone read any Fred Vargas, I noticed she has won the international CWA a few times but when I looked at reviews I couldn't tell if they were fantasy crime i.e werewolves and vampires or straight crime.I can't decide whether she's worth a punt or not. Any comments or tips would be appreciated!

That's a big old challenge, Europe would be smaller and as there is a USA and a Counties challenge, Europe might have a place there. Just a thought. I'm not much of a challenge person myself so I probably wouldn't do it but...never say never!

Jules - as Liz said previously, anyone can do a Europe only challenge within the ATW in 80 thread if they want.

How can you read my mind without knowing me at all? That is exactly what I wanted to ask you all, except that I have read many of the classics, and I'm looking to read more recent books set in England.

I mostly just use the Goodreads app and just wondered if there was a way of marking or being notified of any groups that you have commented on without having to remember which ones they were or having to check back? (I hope that makes sense!)

My app sends me a notification everytime someone updates a topic I've commented on.

Very handy when your phone goes off 4 times in a meeting (I'm looking at you Ian!!!)

@ Jackie, if still having problems, check that you haven't checked a no notifications type button either on your app/phone or on the GR site. I'm an older type git, and just on my PC, so Dave/ANO may be able to assist more re apps/phone etc.

The is an A to Z of authors, Trip round the UK and Around the World in 80 books - all are on going and you join in as you want, take as long as it takes.

Hi Mark - there's also the USA in 51 books and the monthly genre challenge.....this month it's magic realism....good way to expand your reading out of your comfort zones - there's also a historical fiction group who are currently on the 16th Century. Just look down the discussions board.

Indie Book Bargains promotes to UK readers. It's free but a donation to the hard-working owner of the site would probably be appreciated.
