Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 687 comments Hi, Sharon, welcome! Goodreads can be confusing for sure. And it shows you different interfaces depending on the device you’re using and sometimes its mood. For instance, I’m on an iPad right now and sometimes it allows me to link to books and authors, sometimes it doesn’t.

If you look to the right just above the text box you’re typing in, you SHOULD see in green letters, “add book/author.” If you click or tap on that, you get a dialog box where you can type in a title or an author’s name and it will show you relevant options. Select one and it will return you to the text box on the thread page, with code added in brackets. That code turns into a live link after you hit “Post.”

Sharon Gaskin Thanks Abigail 🙏

I see that now, it's obvious really but somehow I completely missed it!

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 687 comments My pleasure! I needed lots of help myself when I started here. And it's not useful that the option is not always available. I hear Goodreads has very little tech support.

I like the idea of a group read. I'm up for it.

Hi Maggie, If other's want to too, we could start a monthly readalong in January?

message 306: by Carole (new)

Carole Mills | 84 comments I’m really enjoying being part of this group and i am trying to join in with as much as possible.

I have a suggestion to make and would very much appreciate others people’s thoughts.

I’m a slow reader and don’t seem to get through anywhere near as many books as others.

I try to mix things up as much as possible. Eg, paperback, kindle, and audio all on the go at one time.

Re the monthly group read I’d like to suggest we start to make suggestions as soon as the previous month’s read has been decided. Therefore if we have to order the book it gives us time to so. Just an idea. What does everyone think?

We could do that. I completely understand it takes a while to get the books. I will try to set up the next read earlier for May.

Thanks Liz, much appreciated! Especially as we have 2 BH in May!

Carole Mills | 84 comments Hi all, I stumbled across a discussion topic/thread on here the other day about books you’ve read but can’t remember the title of. The idea it seems is you explain a bit about the book and others offer suggestions as to what book it is. Now unfortunately I can’t find the thread…or did I dream it?

Hi Carole,

I found this discussion https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
under Book discussions/Buddy reads. There's a link in the comments for a website where you can search books by plot type. That might be useful.

Carole Mills | 84 comments I don’t know if it’s been suggested before but I’ll suggest it anyway…

I buy some of my books new, some from charity shops, I often swap with my sister. I subscribe to Audible, & kindle and also use the library.

Im not a hoarder of books I’ve read…I simply don’t have the room. Also, I’m not someone who reads a book more than once.

Is anyone interested in starting a book swap…..

Idea being it work something along these lines…

People say what books they want to swap….if you find a match you arrange a swap between you and the sender pays postage. Obviously, it’s a trust exercise but if book doesn’t arrive then it’s posted on here for others to see…..

Anyone have any thoughts or views?

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 687 comments I ceased to receive email notifications from Goodreads so I wrote an inquiry about it. I received the following infuriating reply. I suppose all the older users of Goodreads might as well just quit, since the site can't be bothered to communicate with us.
*******************
We’ve simplified the way we notify members about activity on Goodreads. As part of this change, we’ve moved the notification settings to a new Notifications page and updated or removed some of our settings. For example, you’re now only notified on Goodreads about social activity, such as likes, mentions, and follows, and these notifications are no longer sent via email.

To make sure you don’t miss any Goodreads activity, we recommend reviewing your notification settings. For steps to locate the new Notifications page and our updated settings, check out our Help topic: How can I edit my notification settings?

Sorry, Abigail, I've only just spotted your message.

I have been experiencing the same issues. I currently have no idea who's commenting/replying in the group. It's as if I've dropped into the void!

I didn't receive any notification of the changes either and by the radio silence that has been noticeable within the group, I'm confident, we're not the only ones!

I used to get the daily digest email too and the little notification bell would let me know if someone had commented, but not now. Ok let me go and check my settings. Once I work it out, I will broadcast a message to the whole group.

Happy New Year Everyone!

I thought I'd let you know I'm going to do a bit of spring cleaning in here. Nothing too drastic but just tidying up a few discussion topics and threads.

In the interests of fresh starts is there anything you would like to see in here that we currently don't offer? Maybe a new challenge?
Please let us know. 😊

Hi Carole, you'd be better off posting your question as a new topic under Your Reading Experience. I think you'll get responses there. :)

Adam Donagh | 4 comments Hi all, just a quick question. Been apart of this group for a while but I am annoyed (mainly at myself) seeing all the unread notifications.
Is there a way of removed all new comments so I can start fresh?

Many thanks

Adam

message 332: by Tim (new)

Tim Rees (timrees) | 7 comments I completely agree with Adam. I've been away from Goodreads for a long time - focused on writing - but recently I returned and had to open a new account, so start again. This UK readers group should be great for UK writers and readers to intermingle, but I feel like I'm in a town with few inhabitants and there's tumbleweed blowing down the main street. Lots of threads need to be deleted and re-started to encourage growth...

Please disagree with me so I can see there is life here... :)

message 333: by Susie (new)

Susie | 14 comments Hi Tim, agree really the number of old threads. Some really great contributions but sometimes easy to miss.

Hi Susie, How wonderful to get a response. Thank you. I live in Wales, UK, so this group should be perfect for connecting with readers. Many years ago I was very active on Goodreads andf enjoyed a lot of banter, but it does seem to have lost a lot of "active" groups.

Hello all, apologies for the backlog of old threads. I do go through and purge redundant threads from time to time, but it is a slow process. Please be patient - it's just me and Kate, and we have day jobs! I will try to put some time aside to clear some more...
