Trish | 6 comments I remember that the cover had purple on it and there was a picture of a guy and girl facing each other with lightning in the background. She helped him realize his powers and control them.

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments I don't think this matches your cover memory, but could it be Shatterglass by Tamora Pierce?

Trish | 6 comments It isn't Shatterglass, although that's a great book! The one that I'm thinking of isn't part of a series (I don't think). The main character, the young man, lives a normal life in what we consider Earth until she discovers his lightning powers. I think the young woman who helps him may be able to portal to different places? I wish I could remember more.

Annamariah | 292 comments I bumped into Lightning Kissed by Lila Felix. It has a cover that sort of fits and there is teleporting, but it's more recent than the book you're looking for and begins a series... Thought to mention it just in case :p
Lightning Kissed (Lucent #1) by Lila Felix

Kelly (khek) | 270 comments Probably too recent, but The Lightning Catcher, by Cameron?

Was it in the Michael Vey series?
Rise of the Elgen, Storm of Lightning, etc.

Chrissie Whitley (chrissiewhitley) | 144 comments This one may also be too recent, just based on the date of release for the ebook cover that matches your description, but...
Storm (Elemental, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer

Trish | 6 comments These are all such great suggestions, but none of them are the book I'm looking for. ): The cover for Storm is very similar, but I read this book in middle school or early high school, so that would put it being published somewhere between 2001 and 2006. I know that there was at least one instance of sex in it, so it couldn't have been middle reader.

Would this book span other genres or sub-genres aside from Young Adult Fantasy?

Is the focus of the plot their relationship or is there something else (like a crime or mystery) driving the plot forward?

Annamariah | 292 comments Not a perfect fit, but I came across Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo by Obert Skye and thought to mention it just in case (at least it's a free bump).

One of the reviewers say: "For the whole of his fourteen years of life, he has been completely average and unexceptional until, during a bullying incident, he discovers he can call down thunder. Just by thinking about it."
