Ultimate Popsugar Reading Challenge discussion

A classic you have not read but are familiar with the story - examples: Dracula, Frankenstein, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, The Scarlet Letter, Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Pride & Prejudice, Great Expectations, the choices are endless. When you actually read the book that is the basis for these very familiar stories, it is just about always a revelation, changing certain perceptions you may have.

I like that idea a lot. I've read a few books like that recently and it's fascinating to see what I thought they'd be like versus the actual book.

And also the fact that some countries, like mine, don't even have "required" reading and only maybe one book, or two, that are read in many/most schools. So basically any book can be assigned, or chosen by the student, depending on the teacher, and if I remember some book I have probably read it myself. We don't read that much fiction for school anyway and not at all at the university level (if you don't study literature, that is).

I'd be fine not to have any more "required reading" based prompts at all actually, even in the form of "book you were supposed to read but didn't."

How about "a book whose character has the same surname as Mike (Potter)"?

I love the idea of a story you're familiar with through pop culture but haven't read. Or a book that a movie is based on which you saw but haven't read... but worded better lol

I really like this idea. I'm the same, most of the books I read are set in Europe or USA. But 2 of my favourite books I've read this year are The Kite Runner set in Afghanistan and Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood set in South Africa. So I'd like to broaden my reading horizons!

Also loving the idea of a classic you've not read but are familiar with the story. Great idea, a few to chose from.

What a fun idea! On the spot I can think of a few....but I will put some more thought into it to add later. For now some of my ideas are:

Books published in the year you were born
Books with one word titles
Books you enjoyed more than you thought you would
Books about a celebrity you know very little about
Books you chose only by the cover
Books set in the Summertime

I'm closing this thread. As of right now I have over 400 different suggestions from you all (you guys are awesome!). I am going to try and organize, tweak and categorize the suggestions then see about sending it to Popsugar. I'm sure they are already working on next year's list so the sooner I can get this information to them the more likely they may look!
