Me and Delitealex will be reading Dune in December. Would be great if others joined in the fun with us. Anyone else up for it?

I’ve been looking for somewhere to read this one since a lot of groups have done this read already. I’d love to join in. I might not be able to frequently post because December is a very hectic Month even without reading 😉 but can’t wait to join in.

Annerlee was the one organising it and she's not been about much so i'm guessing real life got in the way. Hopefully she'll check in at some point soon and then a plan can be set up. So it's on hold at the moment I guess.

When did you want to start this?

We went with December over in the other thread. As Danisha said, December is a busy month so perhaps if we start early in the month it would be better. Some time around 4th perhaps? I'm flexible though.

Actually, just realised the Desert Spear buddy read starts at the beginning of December (we were going to do end of November) so perhaps starting later would be better, well it would be for me anyway. How about 16th instead?

The 16th would be great I'm trying to finish up some things now to get caught up on buddy reads.

Welcome back Danisha. Actually, I'm starting to think that it might be better to push this back to the end of the month. I have a lot on and I'm not sure I'm going to be reading to start on 16th. How about 28th instead? Would this be ok with you all?

Not yet. I've not had much chance to read anything over Christmas. I still have a book on the go and mow my partner has come down with some bug and is looking increasingly likely that I'll have it soon too. I'm going to be a bit late to this one unfortunately. Have you started it?

Not yet I have it checked out from the library and ready to read. I'm finishing up Death Magic then I'll start probably tonight.

I've started but haven't gotten too far yet. While reading the movie keeps coming into my head.

I haven't seen the movie so I won't have that problem.

There appears to be chapters of a sort but they are not named or numbered which will make it tricky to discuss. We'll have to use percentage perhaps or vague labelling. For example, the first chapter, I would call "The Test".

Haven't read much of it but liking it so far. Will be getting more read this weekend and give my thoughts on the book then. How are you liking it so far.

I'm up to page 112
(view spoiler)[ I'm wondering how many families there are besides the Harkonen and Atreides. Do they all have disputes like this with each other? Jessica seems to have some kind of agenda of her own. What are the Bene Geserits do they have powers and what is their role?

I've only read that first chapter but I liked that. I think that was 18 pages. I'm a bit slow at the moment.

First chapter, "The Test" (view spoiler)[Interesting that they are testing Paul to see if he is human. Surely if his mother is human so is he. And presumably they know who his father is? I know they mention that his mother wasn't allowed to know who her parents were in case they wanted to marry her to a close cousin. Doesn't sound like a good idea to me. So people are paired up with someone rather than falling in love. I guess they are trying to improve the species by being specific in how they breed.

So pleased that so far the character names are normal. That means I only have to get my head around the place names etc. There are some odd names. A gom jabber for example.

The gom jabber was an interesting device. I'm curious whether it did have poison in or not. It was an interesting test stimulating nerve pain. To him it was as if his hand was having something physical done to it. He was surprised to see his hand was still there undamaged at the end of it all. Her did well. An interesting test to prove he is human. The Bene Gesserit seem interesting. They are responsible for sifting the humans but why?

I'm guessing there will be lots to get my head around with regards to their politics, religion and culture. The taste I have had so far is good. I'm liking how things are described and the writing is engaging.

I am curious if Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach. I want to learn more about this.

That's as far as I have got so far. I have a library book due back in 7 days and I'm 60% in so need to get it read quick.
