Sushicat | 843 comments Changez immigrates from Pakistan to the US to get a good education and a good job, to enable him to recapture the prestigious position his family once had in Pakistan. He lives the American dream until 9/11. As the political climate changes, he is forced to reexamine his position.

The way the story is told focuses the story completely on Changez. As they sit in a cafe in Lahore, Changez tells his story to a man, whom we note only when Changez interrupts his narrative to reflect on the other person's reaction to their surroundings and to comment on the environment they're sitting in.

As in Exit West, the narrator is very reflective on his own actions and views, which gives the characters their depth.
