Addicted to YA discussion

When I was in middle school I read a book about slavery, I thought it was called Mr. Midnight, or Mr. Night. I remember it won an award. If I recall correctly it was about a freed slave who comes to a southern plantation and teaches a slave girl to read. If I remember correctly the master of the house finds out and cuts off his hands. It was a book that has always stuck with me, one of the first times in my life that I truly understood the horrors of slavery. I would like to revisit this book, I just cannot remember the name or the author's name. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
