Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments We have praise of bread makers and slow cookers - so I figured that this is the best place to ask for advice about ovens.

I have a built-in gas oven which doesn't work. The eventual solution is to have a new oven, but I am waiting for the joiner/builder who gave me a quote for some kitchen alterations to get back to me with a start date for the work.

In the meantime I have a slow cooker, michaelwave and a hob that works. I was wondering whether a halogen oven was a good idea so that I can eat something other than salads until my kitchen is sorted.

Does anyone have one?
Are they useful?
What other things could I try?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've never used a halogen oven, sorry Janet.

Would you find a toaster oven useful, maybe? We had one when I was a kid and my mom would grill meat in it.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I've never tried one but Lakeland heavily advertied a Remoska cooker. It seems to do a lot. Its not exactly cheap but claims to do everything an oven does and is economical to run www.lakeland.co.uk/18850/Standard-Rem... My godson works for Lakeland and I've always found them to be quite honest in reviews they put the bad ones up if there are any. You might see some halogen reviews as well on there.www.lakeland.co.uk/AllProductRe...

Katy | 2662 comments I've got a mini electric oven, Janet. Might be worth looking at?

Think the box said it was big enough for a 9" pizza or something, so not very big! Useful though

Pat () | -245 comments I had one for a short time. It worked well but was such a bother to clean every time it was used I got fed up with it. It cooks fast and does what it is supposed to. You do need to have a container inside the cooker for liquid. It fries, roasts bakes ect.
But like I said I got feed up with it and gave the whole set cook books and containers to St Lukes to sell. If we were closer you could have tried mine. But it's gone now. Had it for about one and a half to two months.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Thanks for the answers. Someone had suggested the halogen oven, but didn't know much about them!
It is only a temporary thing (I hope!) but the mini oven as Katy suggested sounds as though it might be the best option - particularly if I can then give it to one of the nieces for her student accommodation when I no longer need it.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments that's a great idea!

Andy Elliott | 1446 comments We've gone from a barely functioning electric oven of which the temperature markings rubbed off years ago and has burners with all the power of a kangaroo's fart to a behemoth of a range cooker that I have spent the last month trying not to burn everything that goes on the hob such is their power. The presence of a working temperature gauge has improved my baking no end though, so bad news for the waistlines.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I had halogen hobs. I now have gas hobs and electric convection oven. Much better.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You can cook for me next time I come up then.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I can vouch for his bread and breakfast skills.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh yes his breakfast skills are spot on. I've never had his bread.

He orders a damn fine drink though.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Replying to that one too.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Uh oh. You're programming, GL.

Go lie down.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Oh no!! How did that happen??

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I blame Simon.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Its his bad influence. Leaking through Wordfeud.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Jeez. I've not played in months.
