I love action too and if there isn't any you have to give me great character depth, empathy, philosophical elements to make me think and challenge me. This has that. Book that don't offer this and lack action I'm probably going to give a 1-2*.

The writing got me too. It made it feel like more than the sum of its parts. Totally immersive. I don't even remember the characters to be honest haha. Just how the book made me feel.
Okay... May 10. Not that I don't have enough to keep me occupied by until then but that seems like forever away haha. Something to look forward to I guess.
I'm nervous it won't live up to expectation.

The Bear and the Nightingale
Were the other two books this year that I finished and gave 1*'s to. DNF is auto 1* from me.

It is forever away but starting Expanse in November I don't want to burn through all the DA and aliases at once.

Where did you quit? For me each book was a slight notch better.

After the first. Read it shortly after LPQ and found it really boring in comparison (which is ironic considering there's probably a lot more action in D&C). The characters were interesting, but it just didn't grab me. It's one I think I just need to try again. I don't believe anything beyond the second book was published at the time, so maybe now I can just breeze through. Of course, that means I'll have to do a reread lol.

I would too.

“We say that flowers return every spring, but that is a lie. It is true that the world is renewed. It is also true that that renewal comes at a price, for even if the flower grows from an ancient vine, the flowers of spring are themselves new to the world, untried and untested.
The flower that wilted last year is gone. Petals once fallen are fallen forever. Flowers do not return in the spring, rather they are replaced. It is in this difference between returned and replaced that the price of renewal is paid.
And as it is for spring flowers, so it is for us.”

Great quote. Also a top 5 series for me.

That's an awesome idea.

I read it for a challenge or I might not of either. I should know better. I think I've hated every circus/traveling show portion of a book I've ever read.

Yeah, same here. Circuses just don't interest me.

What I came up with is a book I started in July lol. But it fits, and I couldn't call it my Top book before, so here it is:
Red Sister

Well, okay, NK Jemisin's The Killing Moon can be the runner-up. Four solid stars.
